In a truly blood-curdling story, Kali Jade Bookey, a 14-year-old girl from Wisconsin, slit the throat of her brother’s girlfriend and told her during the attack that she was a psychopath hoping to “get [her] first kill,” according to investigators familiar with the case.
The teenager, a resident of New Richmond, has been charged as an adult with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and is currently being held in juvenile custody without bail. If convicted, Bookey could face up to 40 years in prison, reports the Independent.
As horrific as the episode itself may appear to readers, the details of the incident are even more disturbing.
Here is what happened.
According to the criminal complaint made accessible to the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Bookey called the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday morning to report that two men in a green pickup truck had attempted to abduct her while she was out for a ride on her bike. Feigning innocence, Bookey told the authorities that she gave the two men the address of her brother’s 15-year-old girlfriend and told them to abduct her instead.
Officers responded to her call and found out that the 15-year-old girl, who has not been identified by authorities, was bleeding profusely in her bedroom. After she was taken to the hospital, she told investigators that it was Bookey who had attacked her when she was alone in her trailer. According to the victim’s version of the events, which was later found consistent with Kali’s own story, the 15-year-old was sleeping in her bedroom when Bookey, dressed in black, appeared and put her hands over her mouth.
During the struggle which ensued, Bookey punched the victim multiple times in her face before breaking two bowls over her head. Then the teenager used one of the glass shards to cut the victim’s throat, according to the complaint.
The victim later told investigators that Kali had told her that she had been keeping an eye on her, noting the times when she was alone. Bookey reportedly told her brother’s girlfriend that she was a “crazy psychopath” and wanted the victim to be her “first kill,” according to IBT. Before leaving, Bookey asked the 15-year-old girl if she wanted to die or bleed out. The victim opted for the latter, after which Bookey left, but not before saying these words: “Have a nice afterlife.”
When investigators questioned Bookey about what had happened on Wednesday, the girl stuck to her initial story, saying that she had merely given the address of the victim’s trailer to her “abductors.” However, she later confessed her gruesome crime, saying that she hated the girl because she made her brother more happy than she could.
She also told investigators that she rode 11 miles after leaving her house at 4 a.m. to reach the victim’s trailer. She had apparently attacked the 15-year-old to “scare” her, and hoped that her attack would bring her brother “back to the family.”
Investigators said Kali Jade Bookey’s version of the events was consistent with what the victim had told them, except the part where the victim said that Bookey wanted to kill her. According to Kali, she wanted her to “pass out” so she could be taught a lesson.
Charging documents showed that Bookey had told the girl that she was “a psychopath and crazy and that [the victim] was her first kill and she was probably going to kill again,” reports New York Daily News.
Dawn Bookey, Kali’s mother, told the Associated Press that she had no idea her daughter was plotting such a heinous crime. Her behavior never betrayed any such plans, Dawn said.
“We had no clue,” she said. “There were no signs. We’re all very, very sad.”
