Taylor Swift Ignored In MTV VMA Nods: Twitter Reactions Range From Delight To Depression

Taylor Swift continues to experience some bummers this summer with the latest bad news coming in the form of the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) nominations list. The roll call showing which stars had succeeded in nabbing the coveted spots snubbed Swift, reported Us Weekly.

The nominees for the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards were revealed on Tuesday, July 26, with Beyonce and Adele dominating the list, while Taylor failed to earn even one nod. Beyonce achieved a career-best with 11 nods. Close behind her was Adele, with eight nominations for “Hello” and “Send My Love (To Your New Lover).”

The omission of Swift was particularly shocking when compared to her impressive success just one year ago. While she earned no nods this year, Taylor totaled 10 nominations for “Bad Blood” at the 2015 event, making her the leader of the pack.

Speculation over the possible reasons for her snub includes the fact that her album was released in the latter part of 2014, as well as the extraordinary number of honors she received in 2015. However, Swift unveiled three music videos this year. “Wildest Dreams,” “Out of the Woods,” and “New Romantics” resulted from her 1989 album.

Even though “Wildest Dreams” premiered during the VMA pre-show last year, MTV ignored it this year. In a similar, high-profile showcase, “Out of the Woods” debuted on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in December 2015. However, the network snubbed it as well.

Twitter promptly reacted to the snub with some cheering and some jeering. Team Taylor fans depressed by the oversight by MTV responded by pointing to her triumphs this past year and questioned how it could even be possible that their heroine had been snubbed, noted Elite Daily.

“No Taylor Swift for the VMAs,” mourned one fan. “How…She had well directed Scripted videos….
How#VMAs2016.”

Another follower pointed out that Swift wasn’t the only one to be snubbed by the legendary list of nominees.

“Really sad that @taylorswift13 and @nickjonas got no #VMAs2016 love this year,” tweeted that member of Camp Swift and Jonas.

But Twitter users who are not fans of Taylor were delighted, with some using humor to mock the singer, while others just summed up the situation. Some commentators even expressed delight in looking forward to an MTV Video Music Awards ceremony minus a Swift acceptance speech.

“The #VMAs2016 will be pretty great now that I don’t have to see Taylor Swift be fake surprised when she wins an award.”

Others emphasized the fact that the MTV Video Music Awards nominations added fuel to the feud between Taylor and Kanye West.

“People – Lol, Kanye got nominated and Taylor didn’t! Taylor Swift – *counts money*#VMAs2016,” mocked one Twitter user.

“Kanye has to win Video of the year and best male video for ‘Famous.’ This would truly bury Taylor Swift this year. #VMAs2016,” gloated another.

Not to be left out of the reactions, Pokémon GO players compared Taylor’s situation to the game.

“I’ve got more Lapras than Taylor Swift has got #VMAs2016 nominations,” boasted one.

And for those who long for even more controversy, the Daily Mail noted that although Swift won’t be taking home any coveted awards this year, the song that she and her former boyfriend, Calvin Harris, wrote had two nods.

“This Is What You Came For” features Rihanna. It is nominated in the Best Male Video category, as well as the “Best Collaboration” competition. Making it even more painful for Swift and more pleasurable for Calvin, he received a nomination for “How Deep Is Your Love” in the Best Electronic Video Award category.

And the odds that Harris might offer Taylor comfort during the ceremony are about the same as the possibility that MTV will change lanes and put her on the 2016 nomination list. Calvin blew up on Twitter when Camp Swift spilled the news that she helped him with “This Is What You Came For” and used a pseudonym in the song credits.
