European champions Real Madrid face the biggest challenge of their preseason campaign when they take on four-time consecutive French Ligue 1 titlists Paris Saint-Germain Wednesday in the highest-profile match so far in the 2016 International Champions Cup, the preseason event that sees many of the world’s most popular and elite clubs take their game to Australia, China, and, in the case of Wednesday’s contest, the United States.

Real Madrid is finally reassembling their squad, after many of the team’s biggest stars were given extra time to rest following the 2016 Euros.

Sergio Ramos of Spain and Croatian international Luka Modric flew in on Tuesday to join their team at its training camp in Canada, ahead of the Wednesday showdown in Columbus, Ohio.

The game will also mark a significant test for new Paris Saint-Germain Manager Unai Emery, whose opposite number, Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, was the new PSG coach’s idol.

“With Real Madrid and, in this case, Zidane, two great footballing icons are brought together,” Emery told reporters. “Real Madrid because of their history as a club and Zidane because of the great footballer he was. Logically, translating all of that into the role of coach is not easy and the first works of Zidane, with that title in the Champions League, show there is a continuity in his work as coach from what he was as a player.”

Real Madrid won their second UEFA Champions league title in three years in May when they defeated crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid on penalty kicks in the Champions League final.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, 4:30 p.m. Pacific, at Ohio Stadium — home of the Ohio State Buckeyes college football powerhouse — in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday, July 27.

In addition to the clash of coaches, another focal point of the game on Wednesday will not even be on the pitch — Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verrati, who is widely believed to be a prime transfer target for none other than Zidane and Real Madrid.

But Zidane will not be able to get an up close and personal look at Verrati in Wednesday’s match. Along with fellow Paris Saint-Germain start David Luiz, Veratti will sit out the preseason friendly match in Columbus.

While Luiz is nursing a strained adductor muscle, Veratti is simply being rested by Emery for the showdown with Real Madrid.
