Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone’s mother-in-law, Aparecida Schunck, has been abducted in São Paulo, Brazil. According to a Brazilian magazine Veja, the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of $36.5 million to free her.

The criminals grabbed the 67-year-old Schunck from her home in the Interlagos suburb of São Paulo. The kidnappers have demanded the ransom in Sterling and the cash to be divided into four bags.

Details are scarce about the incident as the Brazilian press remains tight-lipped in order to protect her, as reported by NPR. Brazilian police are not giving any official comment on the kidnapping. Even Bernie’s spokesperson is not sharing any comments or details as of now.

The Brazilian spokesperson for regional ministry said, “We can not confirm nor deny the report. That is our policy in case of suspected kidnapping, to avoid putting the lives of potential victims in danger.”

Bernie Ecclestone is an 85-year-old billionaire heading the Formula One racing franchise. Forbes magazine estimates that Bernie’s net worth would be about $3 billion approximately. In 2012, he married the now 38-year-old Fabiana Flosi, a Brazilian.

Bernie met her for the first time at the Brazilian Grand Pix in 2009. The same year, he had divorced his then wife of 25 years, Slavica Radic, a Croation model, to unite with the young Brazilian. Bernie and Fabiana now live in the UK.

Kidnappings in Brazil were fairly common in the last decade, and São Paulo was known as the kidnapping capital. Sports figures were often a soft target. But later in 2002, the police formed an anti-kidnapping squad to control the chaos. Since then, the kidnapping rate has dipped. However, the crime rate, lack of enough security, and the poor economic situation in the country have raised serious concerns for the participating countries.

Yesterday, Jason Lee, a jiu-jitsu athlete, claimed to be abducted by men dressed as cops, reported The BBC. Those men forced him to pay about $526 as fine and warned not to tell anyone about the incident. Lee won’t participate in Rio Olympics 2016 starting next month because jiu-jitsu is not an Olympic sport. Next month, Rio Olympics 2016 kicks off from August 5 onwards. Lee shared his plight on Twitter.

Last month, Australian Paralympics athlete Liesl Tesch and her trainer were robbed at gunpoint near a beach, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.

The rising incidents of kidnapping and mugging have caused an alarmingly high concern among the athletes and their respective countries for their safety and security. Last week, Raul Jungmann, the Brazilian defense minister, ensured that about 65,000 cops and 22,000 armed security personnel have been deployed in order to give security during the Rio Olympics 2016 starting August 5.

Expecting a crowd of about 500,000 foreign nationals, the Olympics will be taking place in multiple cities including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Hence, the country expects to make some money in multiple ways by hosting the Olympics 2016.

Often praised for his razor-sharp brain, Bernie already has a couple of issues to be solved in the Formula 1 world. The Mercedes’ Formula 1 racers Hamilton and Rosberg have collided at least three out of five times in last five races. Along with that, Bernie’s ramblings to bring “the Leagues concept” to create equal opportunity and money for all teams has not been taken positively, reported The Guardian. The top two Formula 1 car makers, Ferrari and Mercedes, get the highest match-winning bonus. Bernie wants to change that and ensure equal opportunity and flow of the money.

Now the Formula 1 boss Bernie’s mother-in-law getting abducted has only added more to his worries. In 2002, Bernie got a man arrested for trying to extort money from him in exchange for providing protection to his girls.
