Randy Newman Pens New Political Song Just In Time For The Election

Randy Newman — the singer-songwriter best known for his “I Love L.A.,” “Short People,” and his contributions to the Toy Story soundtrack — has written a new political song designed to stir up some controversy before the election. According to the Associated Press, Newman’s latest ditty “I’m Dreaming” is told from the point of view of someone who votes for a presidential candidate simply because he’s white. The song, of course, was penned as a satire.

“I felt that that sentiment exists in the country,” Newman explained during a recent interview. “I don’t know how many people you can get to admit it. I think maybe zero.”

It’s worth noting that the song doesn’t reflect the songwriter’s personal views. He openly supports President Barack Obama and encourages those who enjoy the song to contribute to the United Negro College Fund. The song, he explained, is designed to illicit a few chuckles while addressing a touchy subject Newman feels is still a serious problem in the United States.

According to Slate, the song is currently available as a free download on Newman’s Soundcloud account. S,o if the idea of Newman singing “I’m dreaming of a white President / Just like the ones we’ve always had” appeals to you, the tune is now free for you to enjoy.

“It’s delicate enough that I’m not going to offend people every which way, but I wanted to get it right as best I could,” Newman added. Although he’s critical of America’s problems with racism, Newman stated that he doesn’t think Obama’s success could have happened in any other country. “No European country would have elected a black man. I can’t believe it happened. I think it’s fantastic, like a step on the moon.”
