‘Sonic Mania’ Coming To Consoles, Will We See Sonic Return To His Roots?

Sonic The Hedgehog is returning to consoles, and he’s bringing 2D-gaming roots with him.

For years, fans of the Sonic series have been looking to scratch the itch with an appropriate Sonic game. We’ve seen multiple titles that appear to be somewhat successful, but none have truly reached the status of the classics. Fortunately, developer Sega appears to be working on a title that will do that and more.

We’ve seen Sonic expand from 2D to 3D over the years. From Sonic The Hedgehog to Sonic Adventure, the blue hero has been springing into action with updated graphics and putting the hurt on the bad guys. Sonic has found a home on multiple consoles through the years, and each title seems to be more expansive than the last. Fortunately for old school console fans, Sega’s most recent trailer release appears to be bringing the classic feel of Sonic back.

In a report by Polygon, it’s mentioned that Sega is releasing Sonic Mania to console and PC. The look and feel of it remind us of the Sega Genesis console days, lending much to speculation that the concepts that made the original Sonic games fun will be making the rounds in Spring of 2017. While the game is set to release next year, fans can get a glimpse of early gameplay in the trailer.

The information comes from a live stream that was done during Comic-Con 2016 in San Diego, California. Sonic Mania is a release that comes as a result of Sonic’s 25th anniversary, fans gathering at the Comic-Con event to talk details and information with Sega’s representatives.

Sega revealed that Sonic Mania would feature more than just the classic feel. Alongside Sonic, the game will feature two more playable characters: Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles. Considered just as iconic in the Sonic The Hedgehog series, it seems fitting that they join the heroic hedgehog through yet another action-packed title. The trailer shows us the nostalgic graphics that fans know and love, but Sega has also confirmed that there will be new abilities and worlds for the trio to face. There will also be new worlds to explore, ensuring that the game has a unique experience.

Even the classic stages in Sonic Mania will have new twists, according to Sega. We catch a glimpse of the newly formed levels that Sonic will traverse. If this is any indication of what fans have to look forward to, Sega appears to have a hit. In a report by The Verge, this game may just take the reins and deliver the Sonic title fans have been looking for.

Fans had a chance to play Sonic Mania at Comic-Con 2016, as Sega announced that the game would have a playable version live at the event. Alongside it, Gematsu reported that Sega also announced Project Sonic 2017. While there isn’t as much information available as with Sonic Mania, we get to see a trailer that brings Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic back together. As the name suggests, this title will also see a 2017 release.

Unlike the former game’s announcement, Project Sonic 2017 appears to have current graphics as we see Sonic rip through the streets and avoid massive debris while heading toward his destination. Sega noted that more information would be revealed at a later date, leaving questions as to just what the classic and modern Sonic mashup will mean for the game’s story and gameplay.
