‘The Vampire Diaries’ Officially Canceled, Will Nina Dobrev Return In Season 8?

The Vampire Diaries is officially canceled by The CW due to its falling ratings.

Ever since the inception of the show, fans of The Vampire Diaries have always believed that the supernatural series was here to stay for a long time, but ever since the departure of Nina Dobrev was announced by the showrunners, the series has failed to impress their viewers, and with heavy heart, the officials have finally ended the show.

During the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con, co-creator Julie Plec announced the news that they are not going to renew the show after Season 8. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the highest profile show on The CW will have it’s final season this year. Plec stated that the end is bittersweet and emotional for all of them, and she thanked all the viewers who stayed with them in all these years.

“The greatest honor you can have as a storyteller in the business of television is to be able to make those decisions with your peers and your fellow storytellers and we have all discussed it and we have made the decision that this is it.”

The creators of TVD released a nine-minute long video entitled, “TVD Forever.” In the video, the cast and crew can be seen talking about their experiences and how much are they going to miss being on the show.

Ian Somerhalder, who played the role of Damon Salvatore, Elena’s love interest in the show, released a written statement that was shared by Just Jared in which the Lost actor has expressed his gratitude to all the fans of TVD.

“The sun, the moon and stars aligned for me one day in March when I got the official call that I had been cast in this very special role as Damon Salvatore,” he explained. “I’m so very grateful to those who fought for me to have this opportunity (you know who you are), for those that have worked so hard to make this show happen, and to those that have loyally watched it, making it part of their lives. This show has enriched my life greater than anything I’ve done in my career and it will live in my heart. We are a family and I will miss you.”

While Season 7 was the first ever to get aired without its lead character Elena Gilbert, played by Dobrev, there have been numerous rumors that the actress could be returning as the human-turned-vampire-turned-human in the last few episodes of Season 8. In her earlier interview with TV Line, Plec revealed that they are indeed planning to bring Dobrev back at the end of the Season 8.

“It’s what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it’s what I’ve got in my head… She was very clear about what she wanted the next step in her life to be, and she’s doing a great job of achieving that. So I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end.”

It was around the same time when an insider revealed to Hollywood Life that Somerhalder and Dobrev owe their career to the show, and if the story demands it, they will definitely share screen time in future seasons.

“The show did so much for [Ian and Nina’s] careers and put them on the map. For Julie Plec and the other writers and creators, they feel like they owe it to them to suck it up and send the show off any way they want to send it off.”

The final 16 episodes of TVD will begin Friday, October 21 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. Do you think that Nina Dobrev will return to The Vampire Diaries Season 8 for one last time, and if she will reprise her role of Elena, is she going to share screen with her ex-boyfriend Ian Somerhalder?
