Marilyn Monroe Auction: What’s For Sale?

In life, as in death, Marilyn Monroe was a legend. And now, the latest Marilyn Monroe auction is going to answer the age-old question: just how much are people really willing to pay for Marilyn Monroe’s stuff?

Marilyn Monroe Auction: What’s for Sale?

According to Newswire, Freida Hull — a self-identified confidante, friend, and admirer of the late actress, who died in 1962 — is offering up two well-preserved locks of hair for the latest Marilyn Monroe auction, which will take place this fall. Lest you think this is a little (or a lot) creepy, Hull claims that she received the “blessing” from Monroe to get the locks from her hairstylist (of course, it’s doubtful that the actress would know that, decades after her death, her locks of hair would be up for yet another Marilyn Monroe auction — which is said to fetch at least $8,000 for Hull — but that’s neither here nor there).

But according to the Sioux City Journal, that’s not all that will be available in this fall’s Marilyn Monroe auction. In addition to the locks of hair — which, according to Hull, will include a certificate of authenticity — other items will be provided by the estate of Lee Strasberg (the creator of the infamous Actors Studio) and David Gainsborough-Roberts, a collector of Monroe’s costumes. Gainsborough-Roberts is a British man who, some say, is the owner of the largest collection of the late actress’ stuff, and he’s offering some of her wardrobe from the films Niagara and Some Like It Hot.

If you’re going to go to the Marilyn Monroe auction, you might want to look through the couch for some spare change; the items that will be available for sale range in price from $3,000 to $600,000. It’s unclear if the estate of Monroe, or the collectors themselves, will benefit from the sales at the Marilyn Monroe auction, which will take place at Julien’s of Los Angeles on November 19 and November 20. If you’d like to see the items before you buy them, you can check them out on the Queen Mary 2 before it leaves the docks of New York City on August 9.

Marilyn Monroe has been dead for more than five decades, but interest in the sex symbol hasn’t waned in the least. In addition to the Marilyn Monroe auction that’s taking place this fall, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that actress Gillian Anderson — best known for her work as Scully on The X-Files — is making waves at San Diego Comic-Con because of her depiction as a Marilyn Monroe-type character on American Gods. Shortly after the news of the Marilyn Monroe auction was made public, Anderson tweeted two pictures of herself channeling the actress: one picture focused on her red nails, the other picture was a redux of the blonde bombshell’s infamous pose in The Seven Year Itch.

Indeed, at the same time that the Marilyn Monroe auction was announced, i09 reported that they were absolutely delighted with Gillian Anderson’s depiction of Marilyn Monroe. However, they go one step further as to clarify that it’s not Monroe, per se, that Gillian is portraying, but a “goddess” by the name of Media, who takes on the avatar of several celebrities — including Marilyn Monroe. Media, according to the outlet, is also going to be portraying Lucille Ball, specifically as she played Lucy Ricardo in the legendary show I Love Lucy.
