Vogue’s Stephanie Seymour Cover Offends Domestic Violence Groups [Photo]
The latest issue of Vogue, which features model Stephanie Seymour being choked from behind, has reportedly upset a number of the magazine’s loyal readers, according to ABC News. The supermodel is being throttled by fellow model Marlon Teixeira, an image that has allegedly rankled the feathers of several domestic violence groups.
Sanctuary for Families, Safe Horizon, Equality Now, and the New York chapter of NOW are deeply offended by the imagery, and wrote a letter to Vogue publishers to express their anger over the offending cover.
“This truly disturbing image of a woman being choked sends a dangerous message to anyone who sees this magazine – that choking is a sign of passion rather than of violence,” the organizations wrote. “Choking is not a fashion statement, and certainly not something that should be used to sell magazines.”
Terry Richardson, the man responsible for bringing Kate Upton’s curves to the masses, is the photographer behind the cover. Although the image suggests lust over violence, apparently other folks have perceived the cover in a completely different context.
According to The Gloss, this isn’t the first time a popular magazine has portrayed a woman being chocked in its pages. Hailey Clauson, for example, was reportedly choked in a photograph that appeared in Pop. Given that Clauson was just a teenager, and the images are more than a little provocative, it didn’t take long before people proclaimed the photographs to be horribly inappropriate.
Jezebel (NSFW) reports that Clauson’s parents were none too pleased about the images that were produced during the shoot, prompting them to file a lawsuit against photographer Jason Lee Parry. “She is posed in a blatantly salacious manner with her legs spread, without a bra, revealing portions of her breasts,” the lawsuit states. “The image of Teen in a spread eagle position making her crotch area the focal point of the image may portray a child in a sexually suggestive manner and may be in violation of one or more federal and/or state laws.”
