Box Office Results: ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Slays Competition With $21 Million


Director Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: Retribution, the latest installment in the popular franchise starring Milla Jovovich, claimed the top spot at the domestic box office with $21 million in ticket sales. According to the Associated Press, this is the fourth straight Resident Evil movie to top the North American box office. However, Retribution is currently down $6 million from the previous entry, 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Disney’s Finding Nemo 3D, an updated version of Pixar’s 2003 hit, earned the studio $17.5 million, which landed the film in second place. Worldwide, the popular animated family flick has already pulled in $885 million, and that’s not including DVD sales. In an effort to make even more money off the movie, Disney will release Finding Nemo on Blu-ray this December.

Indiewire reports that acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master has broken a box office record, despite the fact that it only opened in five theaters. The film earned an estimated $750,000 over the weekend, making it the highest limited release debut in history. Producers hope The Master will continue its success when it hopes wide later this month.

Director Ole Bornedal’s The Possession, meanwhile, continues to make executives at Lionsgate extremely happy. The film wiggled its way into the third position with $5.8 million in box office receipts. The Expendables 2, which was also released by the aforementioned studio, earned an additional $3 million, bringing its domestic total to around $80 million.

Universal’s Bourne Legacy, which features The Avengers co-star Jeremy Renner in the lead role, is still hanging around the top 10; over the weekend, the flick managed to bring in an additional $2.9 million. Since hitting theaters last August, the fourth installment of the series has generated around $105 million on a domestic level.
