‘Pretty Little Liars’ Season 7 Spoilers: That Fan-Favorite Proposal Wasn’t Supposed To Happen Now

Pretty Little Liars fans were mostly screaming with joy when that proposal happened during Tuesday’s Season 7 episode. However, it wasn’t supposed to happen like that. Marlene King had earlier plans for that certain man to get down on one knee.

Caution: There are spoilers for Pretty Little Liars Season 7 in this article. If you aren’t caught up, you’ve been warned.

Tuesday, July 19, saw Ezra finally get down on one knee and pop the question to Aria. It was fitting for the couple, but Aria didn’t quite say yes. Instead, there’s a possibility that Nicole is still alive, and Aria may decide that things going on with Elliot/Archer are too much. Would she really want to bring Ezra into that mess right now?

It turns out that the proposal has happened later than PLL showrunner King wanted it to. She had plans for this to take place back in Season 5 but decided to hold off. According to J-14, there was the decision between her and the writers that Ezra and Aria (ship name Ezria) should get engaged first because they were the very first couple. It looks like Aria will eventually say yes to the man.

With hints towards a Pretty Little Liars wedding this season, is it possible that Ezria will finally get their happy ending? Fans couldn’t decide between Ezria, Haleb (Hanna and Caleb), and Spoby (Spencer and Toby). With Toby now engaged to Yvonne, Aria still with Liam, and Hanna still engaged to Jordan at the end of Season 6, it looked like Hanna would be the Liar to get married. That all changed two weeks ago, when Hanna returned Jordan’s engagement ring after her time abducted and tortured in a barn. Spencer and Caleb are still together, but is this a relationship that just isn’t going to last?

King admitted that there has always been the plan to get Ezria back together. They had split up in Season 5 but got back together in the Season 6 finale briefly. Season 7 saw them finally decide to be together, with Aria breaking up with Liam, but very few Pretty Little Liars fans saw a proposal happening so soon. King says that there is something drawing the two together, and many people are a fan of this forbidden love. It helps that the two actors have great chemistry together.

Will Aria definitely say yes, though? King hints that it will happen, but she doesn’t say when. It is possible that Aria will want to work things out in regards to Elliot first, and maybe tell Ezra before she accepts the proposal. Like Spencer not wanting to involve Toby, Aria won’t want to involve Ezra any more than he already is, and in the trailer for the next episodes she says that she can’t say yes when she may spend the rest of her life behind bars. Ezra will, of course stand by Aria, as he always has done in the show when it comes to A and now A.D.

There may also be the Nicole storyline to play out. Is the information about her still being alive just a red-herring to get fans worrying about Ezria? Will Nicole turn back up and throw a spanner in the works? Some fans hope not, saying that it’s the last season of Pretty Little Liars and there just isn’t enough room for extra, unnecessary characters. This may be the season of homecomings, but fans don’t want to see Nicole.

Pretty Little Liars Season 7 returns in two weeks on Freeform. Next week will see Aria giving her answer, and viewers may find that Elliot isn’t dead after all.
