Ted Cruz stole the show at the Republican National Convention (RNC) when he refused to endorse Donald Trump. Sheldon Adleson was reportedly not impressed, and Hillary Clinton capitalized on the speech.
The Ted Cruz RNC speech has spawned a plethora of negative reactions from the Republican party, who were hoping for a united party at the convention.
Cruz congratulated Trump on winning the nomination and attacked Hillary Clinton on policies, but he stopped short of giving Donald Trump the nod.
“Don’t stay home in November,” Cruz said as he neared the end of his speech. “Stand and speak and vote your conscience.”
The speech was well received until that point and the convention began to boo, and many chanted “We want Trump!”
Ted Cruz’s wife Heidi was escorted out of the building and refused to comment to the media. The Independent Journal Review reports that Ted Cruz was denied access to billionaire GOP donor Sheldon Adleson’s suite. The publication reports:
“A former U.S. Senator inside the Adelson’s luxury box at the Quicken Loans arena told Independent Journal Review that Cruz approached the suite after he finished his speech that fell short of endorsing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.”
The senator did not mince words when asked why Cruz was denied entry, stating “because he’s a piece of s**t.”
According to CNN, a senior aide to Sheldon Adelson commented on Ted Cruz speech:
“We could not allow Ted Cruz to use the Adelsons as a prop against Donald Trump,” he stated. “The Adelsons support Donald Trump and made that clear. They like Ted Cruz, but there was no way the Adelsons were going to be the first stop after not endorsing. That would be disrespectful to our nominee.”
Donald Trump tweeted that he was aware of Ted Cruz’s speech, yet allowed him to speak. It seems like Trump was aware of the reaction Cruz would get and let the runner-up to the Republican nominee shoot himself in the foot.
Hillary Clinton also reacted to the speech by capitalizing on the vagueness of Ted Cruz’s RNC speech.
Most of the speakers at the RNC have chosen to make a case against Hillary Clinton rather than praise Trump. The unusual candidate has created an unconventional RNC.
Ted Cruz did not trash Trump. However, his refusal to endorse the Republican nominee has created a dramatic atmosphere and shows that the Republican party is not truly united.
During the race for the nomination, Trump launched several personal attacks on Ted Cruz, which he took personally. Donald Trump mocked Heidi Cruz’s physical appearance and linked the Senator’s father to JFK’s assassination.
Eric Trump does not think Ted Cruz’s speech at the RNC will make a difference. Chris Christie also stated that he was disappointed:
“I think it was awful,” Christie said. “And quite frankly, I think it was something selfish. And he signed a pledge. And it’s his job to keep his word.”
Reports suggest that Ted Cruz was prepared for the reaction and did not expect the people at the RNC to approve of his refusal to endorse the party’s nominee.
Twitter has reignited Ted Cruz’s nickname “Lyin’ Ted” for not keeping to his pledge. Several supporters of Trump have been equally critical of the nominee. Paul Ryan stated that Trump’s comments on a hispanic judge were textbook racism, and Newt Gingrich called the remarks about judge a “mistake” and “inexcusable.”
