Gwen Stefani Discusses Her Personal ‘Hell’ Amid ‘This Is What The Truth Feels Like’ Tour

Gwen Stefani is speaking out about her new music following the debut of her recently launched This is What the Truth Feels Like Tour.

Just days after Shelton popped up at Gwen Stefani’s Virginia concert for an unexpected performance of their hit duet “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” the former No Doubt singer discussed her new music and revealed how songwriting has helped her through hard times.

“It’s incredible to be in the position to be able to be a songwriter and share your story with people and then have people relate to it,” Gwen Stefani said on July 19, according to a report by the Tampa Bay Times. “It makes you feel better about yourself in your own life, and you feel comforted. I just am really in the moment right now. I’m kind of in disbelief that this is all happening. I’m super, super grateful.”

In 2015, Gwen Stefani’s 13-year marriage to Gavin Rossdale came to an end and months later, Us Weekly claimed Rossdale had been caught engaging in a three-year affair with their children’s former nanny, Mindy Mann. In November, a source told the magazine that Gwen Stefani had been informed of the alleged affair by another staff member and discovered incriminating messages sent between Rossdale and Mann on their family’s iPad.

“I literally was in the middle of hell in my own personal life, and nobody knew,” Gwen Stefani said of her troubles. “I just wanted to get under the covers and eat pizza and cry.”

According to Us Weekly magazine, Gwen Stefani was made privy to Rossdale’s alleged affair in February of last year, but because Rossdale initially denied cheating, claiming his messages to Mann were nothing more than flirtation, they stayed married. However, after several months of trying to get the relationship back on track, Rossdale allegedly admitted to the affair, and in August of that year, the former couple announced they were parting ways.

Over the last five years, Gwen Stefani had reportedly fallen into a “desperate place,” eager to keep up with the up-and-coming artists and “maybe doing it for the wrong reasons.”

“I wanted to be on the radio,” Gwen Stefani recalled. “I wanted to have a hit. Like, who doesn’t?”

While the fallout from her divorce was certainly a hard pill to swallow, Gwen Stefani has made it through and as she recovered from her split from Rossdale, she fell in love with Blake Shelton while filming The Voice at the end of last year.

In the months since Gwen Stefani’s romance with Shelton began, she has released a new album, much of which was inspired by her split from Rossdale and newfound love with Shelton.

“Music has to be from real life, and it has to be honest and with the right intentions for people to connect to it,” Gwen Stefani explained. “I just feel so grateful to have to go through the pain to get to this place because sometimes that’s what you have to do.”

Although Gwen Stefani will not be seen when The Voice returns for its 11th season later this year, she is expected to return in some capacity at some point. Meanwhile, Shelton will be seen during the series’ fall season and shows no signs of slowing down when it comes to his coaching role.
