Maya Rudolph Tours With Her Prince Cover Band: Princess

Maya Rudolph has just performed an a cappella cover of Robyn’s iconic “Call Your Girlfriend,” according to Entertainment Weekly. But to do it properly, the 43-year-old actress invited Emma Stone to help her do the cover.

But Maya Rudolph didn’t do Robyn’s version of “Call Your Girlfriend,” but the one parodied by three Swedish women in 2011. Their hilarious video, in which the three women use empty tubs of butter for the beat, has been viewed several million times ever since.

During her appearance on the season finale of Maya & Marty, Maya Rudolph said she really loves the video and that she had prepared her own cover of the song along with actress Emma Stone. And so obviously they performed their cover later in the show, with Stone claiming that it was their first public performance of Robyn’s 2011 single.

“We’re just going to try it for you for the first time tonight.”

Before the two started singing the song, Maya Rudolph, who turns 44 later this month, asked the audience not to put them under “pressure.”

Maya Rudolph really loves doing covers, it appears. The 43-year-old former Saturday Night Live star is preparing to do a concert tour with her own Prince cover band, Princess, this fall, according to Boston Magazine.

Maya Rudolph, who once played keyboards in the former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp’s Rentals band as a kid, will be touring with her band named Princesses. It will be an unusual experience for the former Saturday Night Live star, who has been busy co-hosting variety show Maya & Marty with Martin Short.

Maya Rudolph’s first gig with her Princess band will take place at the Paradise on September 21. The 43-year-old actress will perform alongside Gretchen Lieberum, a singer-songwriter who the former Bridesmaids star has been performing with since college.

And although it may seem as if Maya Rudolph has found herself in acting and comedy, she still cannot give up her hope of performing in front of large crowds. And it doesn’t matter whether she is performing her own hits or doing covers to hit songs such as Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend” or Prince hits, she is having fun doing it.

And that’s all that matters for Maya Rudolph, who won MTV Movie Awards’ Best Gut-Wrenching Performance award for her role in Bridesmaids back in 2012.

Her Princess band was formed as a Prince tribute band and is comprised of Rudolph and Lieberum. Their first performance is set to be held at the Paradise Rock Club this fall, and all those who have doubts in Maya Rudolph’s singing talents can check out her recent cover performance with Emma Stone or find her musical pieces back from her Saturday Night Live days.

In fact, Maya Rudolph has musical roots in her family as her mother is the famous ’70s soul singer, Minnie Riperton, while funk star Teena Marie is Maya’s godmother. On the Paradise Rock Club website, it says that her Princess band will sing “love letters” to Prince, who died on April 21.

Those who watched Late Night With Jimmy Fallon may remember Maya Rudolph and her fellow band member sing “Darling Nikki” with the Roots. The band also recently performed “Sometimes It Snows in April” along with D’Angelo on Fallon’s current tonight talk show, The Tonight Show.

But most Maya Rudolph’s fans love her for her ability to deliver natural, unforced laughs when hosting NBC’s variety show Maya & Marty with Martin Short, according to ET Online. But in bloopers, the two literally cannot stop laughing!

As seen in an exclusive blooper reel from one of the show’s episodes, Maya Rudolph and Short can’t keep it together while interviewing Ben Stiller. The final episode of the variety show aired on July 12.
