Taylor Swift’s squad is coming to her rescue. Taylor’s famous group of celebrity girlfriends, an exclusive group that includes Selena Gomez and model Martha Hunt, have reacted to their BFF’s back-and-forth squabble with Kanye West after West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, posted Snapchat videos of a phone call that her husband made to Swift before he released his controversial single, “Famous.”
In the song, West calls Swift a “b**ch” and says he might still a have sex with her because he made her “famous.” E! News posted the entire transcript of Kanye’s phone conversation with Taylor, which the “Bad Blood” singer now says was recorded without her knowledge, and her loyal squad quickly defended her on social media.
During the now-posted chat, Kanye read Taylor the line in “Famous” that mentions her name, and she agreed that the lyric is tongue-in-cheek and said she appreciated that the rapper contacted her to give her a head’s up about the line. West reiterated that all he cares about is Taylor “as a person and a friend,” and added, “I don’t want to do rap that makes people feel bad.”
Swift seemingly gives West her blessing during the conversation.
“Umm, yeah I mean go with whatever line you think is better. It’s obviously very tongue in cheek either way. And I really appreciate you telling me about it, that’s really nice…Like I would never expect you to like tell me about a line in one of your songs…I don’t think anyone would listen to that and be like that’s a real diss she must be crying…I’m always going to respect you. I’m really glad that you have the respect to call me and tell me that as a friend about the song. It’s a really cool thing to do and a really good show of friendship so thank you.”
Swift even went so far as to says she would have the rapper’s back if she is asked about the lyrics later—like on the Grammy’s red carpet.
“And you know, if people ask me about it I think it would be great for me to be like, ‘Look, he called me and told me the line before it came out. Joke’s on you guys, we’re fine.’ You guys want to call this a feud; you want to call this throwing shade but right after the song comes out I’m going to be on a Grammys red carpet and they’re going to ask me about it and I’ll be like, ‘He called me.’ It’s awesome that you’re so outspoken about this and be like, ‘Yeah, she does. It made her famous.’ It’s more provocative to say ‘might still have sex…’ It’s doesn’t matter to me. There’s not like one [line] that hurts my feelings and one that doesn’t.”
Taylor previously said she never gave Kanye approval for the controversial line and that she even cautioned him about releasing a song “with such a strong misogynistic message.” But while Kim’s video proves there was a dialogue between the two superstars before the rapper released “Famous,” what it doesn’t show is Taylor giving Kanye the OK to call her “b**ch” in the song.
After Kim Kardashian posted the video of her husband’s conversation with Swift, an angry Taylor took to Instagram to post a lengthy response.
“Where is the video of Kanye telling me he was going to call me, ‘that b**ch’ in his song?” Swift wrote. “It doesn’t exist because it didn’t happen.”
Taylor also said she no longer wanted to be involved the drama with the Wests.
“Being falsely portrayed as a liar when I was never given the full story or played any part of the song is character assassination. I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one I never asked to be a part of, since 2009,” the singer added.
After the recorded conversation had been posted posted online by Kim, Taylor Swift’s squad had plenty of reaction. Swift’s longtime BFF Selena Gomez wrote there are more important things to talk about, and she questioned why celebs couldn’t use their voice to talk about something that matters. The squad superstar also blasted the “hate” that is being spewed by West and his wife.
Victoria’s Secret model Martha Hunt, another squad member, also addressed the “fabricated” story and urged others to spread love instead of hate.
Ditto for reluctant Taylor Swift squad member Chloe Grace Moretz, who called out the entire entertainment industry to get their “heads out of a hole” and take a look at what’s happening in the real world.
It’s no surprise that the squad is standing by their girl. A few of Taylor Swift’s most beloved squad members haven’t commented on the newly-released phone call yet, including Lena Dunham, Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, Lily Aldridge, Blake Lively, and Cara Delevigne.
