As Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie gets ready to open in theaters Friday, July 22, fans can expect to see a number of fun celeb cameos and serious style updates, all designed to bring Patsy (Joanna Lumley) and Edina (Jennifer Saunders) into the modern era, reported the New York Times.
"Rebecca Hale, the stylist for 'Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie,' had only six weeks to find looks that reinvent the characters for a modern fashion audience."
It's been more than 24 years since the hit British television series first hit the airwaves, and the new Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie adaptation of the hit show has Patsy and Edina exchanging their often over-the-top Christian Lacroix looks for more modern style updates, including looks by British designers Stella McCartney and Sibling.According to Entertainment Weekly, the nearly a quarter of a century that has passed since Patsy and Edina first made cult-sitcom history with Absolutely Fabulous in a cloud of champagne, cigarettes, and Chanel has had little bearing on their impervious penchant for excess and – ultimately – hilarity.
"Age may bring Botox, but it can't buy wisdom: PR agent Edie's delusions of grandeur are undiminished by her dwindling client list and failed attempt at selling her memoirs; magazine editor Patsy's still a chain-smoking, man-eating hedonist with a Billy Idol snarl and an emergency cache of pharmaceuticals stashed in her platinum bouffant."
In Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, the ladies are still fearless and reckless, regretting nothing as they make their way through a raucous plot that is often pure farce, marked by campy silliness, glittery settings, and an endless stream of celeb cameos, along with series regulars. The list of cameos in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie reportedly includes Kate Moss, Jon Hamm, Rebel Wilson, Joan Collins, and Jerry Hall, among others. The success of Absolutely Fabulous isn't really born from a new concept, considering other similar heroines in the girl power genre, including Lucy and Ethel, Laverne and Shirley, and Kate and Alli. Still, that's where most of the parallels begin and end, with Edina and Patsy pushing the boundaries to another level.
"The Stoli-swigging, fashion-flaunting, pill-popping, occasionally gender-bending but perpetually hungover anti-heroines of the BBC classic comedy 'Absolutely Fabulous' have endured (and injected) a lot, enabling each other through an on-again / off-again bender that's about to hit the 25-year mark."
Much like the inaugural episode of the series, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie starts off with the gals deep in the throes of a massive hangover before quickly spiraling downward to new hilarious lows. Little updates include the use of hashtags and Keurigs, as well as vaping and – perhaps predictably – Tinder and social media. Still, the more Patsy and Edina try to change, the more they (thankfully) stay very much the same.
Watch the trailer for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. There's no word out ahead of next week's release of Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie if it will mark the end of the road for the beloved albeit wacky duo, but if this is the end of the pair's always-soused saga, the ladies definitely go out on a high note.
"The sheer volume of famous faces – and the work it takes to wedge them all in – sometimes overwhelms the story (or worse, tries to substitute for it)," wrote Entertainment Weekly. "And every alumni walk-on and winked reference is so deeply part of the show's mythology that it's hard to imagine AbFab newbies finding an entry point."
Still, Saunders and Lumley have retained their undeniable chemistry over the years, creating a riotous good time for all in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, taking audience members on a rollicking journey of unhinged abandon. Are they also a danger to themselves and others? Undoubtedly. Are they greedy, shallow, and pill-popping mad women? Of course. But they're also – as always – bloody good fun.
