‘Alone’ Second Season Finale Recap With Spoilers: Who Was The Last Man Standing?

This season on Alone, the 10 survivalists were better prepared and to some degree knew what to expect when they were dropped off at their individual designated locations on Vancouver Island. Smallscreen noted that Alone participants Jose Martinez Amoedo, David McIntyre, and Larry Roberts were the final three men left during the season finale. They managed to last longer than the Alone participants from the first season, and after 66 long and lonely days, only one man was left in the competition.

David McIntyre, 49, was the one that was able to hold on the longest, which netted him bragging rights and the $500,000 prize. Fans of the series are aware that the challenges faced by the Alone survivalists are so much more than just pushing through any physical discomfort or pain, but that it all comes down to who can maintain their mental fortitude the longest. For David, his three children (14, 17, and 24) were the most important motivating factor that helped ground him mentally so that he was able to endure the grueling challenge alone to the very end. When his daughter, Erin, appeared to let her father know he was the winner, one of the first things he said to her was that he did it for them.

According to TV Ruckus, there were times when David looked as though he was on his way out, especially after falling while fishing and severely bruising his knees. In the beginning of his Alone experience, he had a lot of trouble finding enough to eat, and was worried that if he didn’t find a way to procure food, he would be forced to tap out. Although he knew that was a very real possibility, he recognized that instead of dwelling on the negative, he needed to figure out a way to survive on Alone. He buckled down, and through a lot of trial and error, he started catching crabs and fish. He became so successful that when no longer faced with the immediate threat of starvation, he was able to keep his spirits up enough to persevere.

McIntyre is a post-apocalyptic fiction writer who was born in rural Pennsylvania, but now calls Michigan home. As a teenager, he developed a passionate interest in wilderness survival and primitive skills. He spent a lot of time hunting, fishing, trapping, and hiking through the Appalachian Mountains. Later, he ended up in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where he founded the Per Ardua Wilderness Ministry and the Bushmaster Wilderness Survival School.

Besides practicing wilderness survival in the Appalachian forests, he broadened his horizons and spent time in numerous other remote locations such as Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest, and in the tropical Alpine ecosystem. On Alone, his upbeat attitude and particular skills helped him tremendously during his time on Vancouver Island.

David just would not give up, and completely alone with no camera crew and no team to rely on, he beat the odds. When he left on the rescue helicopter with his daughter, he took one last look at the place he had nicknamed “Desolation Cove.”

“My philosophy on suffering is that God’s trying to teach me something,” he said. “And, I know that in the end, I get to keep those lessons, and the pain goes away.”

Hopefully by now, the pain he endured all alone has gone away as he recovers from the grueling challenge. Now David and the rest of his family can relax and reap the rewards from his time on Alone.

As for Alone, the third season will be in a different location, so the next crop of survivalists will be going into unfamiliar territory. Once again, the Alone men and women will be equipped with only their limited gear, their wilderness experience, and cameras to self-document their journeys. These Alone participants will be separated from each other in the harsh terrain of Patagonia in South America. To survive, they will have to find food and water, build shelters, get a fire going, and fend off a myriad of predators. As before, each Alone survivalist must contend with extreme isolation, psychological distress, and treacherous environmental conditions.

Alone is produced for the History Channel by Leftfield Pictures. David George, Brent Montgomery, Shawn Witt, Zachary Green, and Gretchen Palek serve as the executive producers for Leftfield Pictures. Russ McCarroll and Zachary Behr serve as the executive producers for History.
