J.J. Abrams Teases ‘Star Trek 4’ And Reveals That Chris Hemsworth Will Return As George Kirk

There is still a week until Star Trek Beyond is released in theaters, but that doesn’t mean the future isn’t already being looked at. J.J. Abrams is a busy man and truly likes going where no man has gone before, and he’s also someone who likes to tease the fans. Well, he’s already making it known that another sequel, a fourth film, is on the way and Chris Hemsworth will be returning as the character of George Kirk.

In 2009, Star Trek pulled in $385 million at the worldwide box office while Star Trek Into Darkness was able to up that to $467 million worldwide in 2013. It is expected that Star Trek Beyond is going to surpass both of those films and that’s why Abrams isn’t afraid to start talking about the next sequel.

As reported by Screen Rant, the information that there will be a Star Trek 4 (working title) came straight from J.J. Abrams himself, but there is much more to it. Scott Mantz of Access Hollywood tweeted out the scoop and it doesn’t seem as if a new possible plot is just a pipe dream, but an actual reality.

Making things even better is that Hemsworth would be back as George Kirk, whom he played for mere moments in the opening of Star Trek in 2009.

Of course, this also means that Chris Pine would be back to take on the highly important role of Captain James T. Kirk. It has also been reported that Zachary Quinto would be coming back as Mr. Spock, but there isn’t a whole lot more known about the fourth film.

Adding back Hemsworth as George Kirk brings about an all-new storyline that could deal with the past of the Kirk family. It may take the focus off of some missions and more onto what made Captain Kirk the man he is today.

It should be interesting to note that Mantz worded things in his tweet to say “bring together” Pine and Hemsworth, which could make them serious co-stars with equal screen time.

For those that haven’t yet seen the 2009 version of Star Trek, you may want to stop reading now as there are some spoilers ahead.

In the opening moments, George Kirk (Hemsworth) sacrifices himself to save the lives of the crew on the U.S.S. Kelvin. That was just mere moments after his son James was born, and it led to them never having a relationship together.

One thing to think about is that this could lead to the idea of time travel since it would then explain how George Kirk is not that much older than James Kirk. One other thing to explain would be that of George being alive again, but that is, of course, if it isn’t James going back into the past to a time when his father was still alive.

Fans are going to love this and releasing this news right before Star Trek Beyond hits theaters may help the box office that much more.

The plot of Star Trek 4 is only something that is being teased at this time, but if J.J. Abrams is already making it known, then it can be expected to happen. He doesn’t just throw around hints without having some sort of backing behind them. Adding in the idea that Chris Hemsworth is going to return as George Kirk makes it so much more than speculation, and it looks as if the franchise is going to continue heading out into the farthest depths of space.
