Today Is Gummi Worm Day, Ways To Celebrate This Squiggly Treat

Today is Gummi Worm Day, and if you’re a fan of the sugary, squiggly treat, you might want some ideas for celebrating Gummi Worm Day.

First and foremost, gummi worms were created after the German company Haribo had amazing success with their 1920 confection gummi bears. Gummi bears have been enjoyed for nearly a century, but another candy company decided they wanted in on the gelatinous business. While gummi bears started in 1920, gummi worms didn’t hit the scene for several generations later.

Fellow German confectioner Willy Mederer began working with sugar in 1948, and over time, his son Herbert joined the business. The company and product line grew until it became known as Trolli, and by the 80s, gummi worms were born. Today, Trolli gummi worms are recognized, loved, and gobbled up across the U.S. The South Florida Reporter published a detailed history about gummi worms for National Gummi Worm Day.

Trolli has a strong social media presence, and they have fun, wacky, and zany campaigns on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. In honor of Gummi Worm Day, Trolli released a video on Twitter showing how to make a gummi worm piñata cake. The full recipe is included in the video, and the finished cake is made of layers of bright, vivid colors, and the center has been hollowed then filled with gummi worms.

You can check it out below.

Unfortunately, Trolli isn’t giving away free gummi worms today, but many businesses, offices, and retailers are. This is on the local level, and there aren’t any companies giving out gummi worms on a widespread basis. Most people celebrate Gummi Worm Day by buying gummi worms to eat alone or share with friends and family. You can see some examples of how people are sharing gummi worms in the workplace as a way of celebrating Gummi Worm Day in the tweets below.

This woman exchanged the gummi worms for gummi bears, which might defeat the purpose of Gummi Worm Day. What do you think?

Because gummi worms are so creative and fun, and both kids and adults love them, they are often used in many recipes. Cupcakes and cakes frequently add gummi worms to make unique and festive desserts. Dirt cups are popular treats that are shown in the video above. These can be made as cakes or cupcakes, and each layer features dirt that covers the worms. Pinterest has over 1,000 ideas for using gummi worms in dirt cups, and these are great additions for holidays, kids birthday parties, and more. It is common to see gummi worms adorn cakes and cupcakes at Halloween parties as well.

Dirt cake isn’t only for Halloween or parties. This no-bake recipe shows how you can make dirt or even sand cake for summer beach parties.

Kids like to get in on the fun too, and making dirt or sand cake with gummi worms is a great activity that children will enjoy as well. Keep in mind that because of the gelatin in gummi worms, they aren’t suitable for vegans.

How will you celebrate Gummi Worm Day? Are you going to try your hand at a gummi worm cake? Will you make gummi worm dirt cups? Or maybe you’ll join countless worldwide and eat gummi worms straight out of the bag? Whatever you decide is fine. Have a happy Gummi Worm Day.
