Larry Mitchell’s ‘Send Me Back To Africa’ GoFundMe Page Gets $485 Of $100,000 Goal

A man named Larry Mitchell is getting plenty of attention for his GoFundMe page as Larry turns to the public to send him back to Africa. As reported by the Inquisitr, “Go back to Africa” was a refrain shouted by a Trump supporter at a Cleveland rally. In fact, “Go back to Africa” is a common refrain leveled at African Americans who find themselves at the receiving end of racist tirades — especially during political discourse.

For Mitchell, hearing “Go back to Africa” shows that he’s not alone in having heard the phrase. A writer for The Root named Yesha Callahan describes that hearing “Go back to Africa” for the first time as an 11-year-old confused her, because she was from New Jersey. Indeed, shouting “Go back to Africa” to an African American whose family has lived in the United States for centuries is akin to telling a multi-generational Italian American to go back to Italy.

It’s this logic that has Larry turning the “Go back to Africa” insult on its head and asking people to raise $100,000 in order to send him back to Africa. Whether tongue-in-cheek or real, Mitchell’s GoFundMe page has attracted plenty of attention, having been shared more than 17,000 times on social media. Larry calls out any racist hate groups who want to see Mitchell go back to Africa to raise the funds for him to do so.

“Send me ‘back’ to Africa fund… If you want me to go back to Africa I will gladly go… you can help make your dream and mine come true… accepting all donations… KKK, Skin Heads and anyone else with like mind thinking are welcome to donate… Thank you.. God bless you and America… #putyourmoneywhereyourhateis.”

The GoFundMe page is causing quite a bit of buzz on Twitter and Facebook, with Larry telling people to put their money where their hate resides. Apparently, Larry’s GoFundMe page has also inspired at least one copycat GoFundMe page, titled “Go Back to Africa.”

Created by Ra Ma’at from San Antonio, Texas, on July 14, the language of that “Go Back to Africa” GoFundMe page contains almost identical language to Mitchell’s GoFundMe page.

“I am asking you to help me help you make this country great again if you feel that Black People being here has in anyway made this country so bad. I served 20 plus years in the USAF while trying to keep America great. But even after I gave so much for this country I am still looked at as the N-word when I walk in the store…So please show your Hate for Me and your Love for The Great Country of America by making a donation of $20 or more to send my m***** a** back to Africa in as soon as possible. Your donation will be used to help me move me and my Family as far away from you and your Family as possible.”

Larry, who hails from Kokomo, Indiana, is getting all sorts of comments from folks on his GoFundMe page. Certain comments prove that they aren’t necessarily from racist folks who want to see Larry go back to Africa, but from people who are donating to Mitchell’s page because they find it funny and genius.

The GoFundMe page, which is titled “Send me back to Africa,” was created on July 8. Thus far, at least 39 people have given donations to the GoFundMe page in the past six days, sending Larry’s total raised to $485 as of this writing. It’s a long way from the $100,000 goal of Larry’s GoFundMe page — and that fact is also being noted in the comments.
