‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7 Could Be Followed With A Spin-Off: Showrunners Hint Cast Members Could Return For Another Show

It was recently confirmed that following the conclusion of Game of Thrones Season 6, the show would now into its final two seasons. For fans of Game of Thrones, the news was undeniably going to be difficult to swallow, considering Game of Thrones has been a huge part of HBO’s schedule for over six years.

However, according to the Radio Times, Game of Thrones might not actually be disappearing from our screens following the conclusion of the show’s sixth and seventh seasons. The hit HBO fantasy drama’s showrunners have reignited rumours that Game of Thrones‘ conclusion could be followed by a spin-off set in the same universe. It’s a move that would definitely make sense considering the success HBO has seen with Game of Thrones, with the network reluctant to give that up just yet.

DB Weiss and David Benioff are believed to be coming round to the idea of a Game of Thrones spin-off, set to air following the show’s conclusion. They feel that A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin wrote the source material with ample opportunity to create not just one but various spin-offs. Saying “One of the great things about what George [R.R. Martin] did is he didn’t just build a story… he built a world,” about the capacity for future adventures within the Game of Thrones universe.

They continued by speaking about the various rich stories that play out within the world of Game of Thrones. When writing the original source material, George R.R. Martin was keen to give every character a complete back story and that’s a decision that could help Benioff and Weiss in creating a spin-off.

However, the fact still remains that Game of Thrones‘ showrunners aren’t ready to start thinking about a spin-off just yet. They’ve remained adamant that if they were to go ahead with another show within the Game of Thrones universe, it would only be following the conclusion of the current series. Under its current production and release schedule, Game of Thrones is to complete its final two seasons at some point in 2018, with previously mentioned delays taken into consideration.

Game of Thrones‘ showrunners have in the past dismissed rumours that they have a spin-off of the hit HBO fantasy drama planned. However, their recent comments suggest that they’ve had something of a change of heart, with plans to properly consider a spin-off when the main show comes to a close following its two final seasons.

The question still remains as to what path a future Game of Thrones spin-off would take. According to CBS News, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, best known for his role as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones has suggested he’d like to see a sitcom set within the Game of Thrones universe. He joked about how he’d happily do Game of Thrones spin-offs for the rest of his career and his favourite idea sees his character and Gwendoline Christie’s Brienne of Tarth moving in together as roommates.

It’s largely unlikely that Benioff and Weiss would head down the sitcom route with their Game of Thrones spin-off, especially considering their past work. However, there’s a number of characters in Westeros with a good deal of comedic value, so the possibility is always there. For now, though, fans of Game of Thrones will be pleased to hear that the end of Game of Thrones as a TV series isn’t necessarily that last we’ll see of Westeros and its inhabitants.
