Men And Women Choose Alcoholic Summer Drinks Differently, Poll Shows

Men and women choose summer drinks differently, according to a new poll conducted by Harris. The poll looked at different flavors for alcoholic drinks as well as where men and women engage in drinking alcoholic beverages. The study showed that while there were some similarities between the genders, there were many notable differences. For those planning the perfect barbecue, pool-side party, or providing drinks for a mostly male-oriented sporting event, knowing which drinks to serve is paramount to a successful occasion. One thing that both men and women could agree upon is that when it comes to adult beverages, the number one characteristic the drink needed was for it to be refreshing.

According to Nielson, who conducted the study through Harris, after refreshing, the most popular quality for alcoholic summer drinks is fruity. More men preferred drinks that were smoky, spicy, and handcrafted while women preferred citrus-flavored, sweet, and crisp drinks. More women preferred frozen or slushy alcoholic summer drinks. The top place both men and women enjoyed drinking alcoholic summer drinks was at a barbecue. Other popular locations included a picnic, at a pool or beach, and a patio bar. The least popular place to enjoy alcoholic drinks was a rooftop bar. The study showed that when compared to winter drinking, most people take advantage of the warm summer climate and enjoy drinking alcoholic beverages outdoors.

The study showed that more people drink malt beverages during the summer than in the winter months. News Channel 10 shared the Harris Poll release that included a statement by Danelle Kosmal, vice president of Nielsen’s Beverage Alcohol Practice.

“During the summer, consumers are often looking for specific qualities in their adult beverages to help satisfy their summer thirsts. Beverage alcohol manufacturers have introduced a crop of new products that perfectly align with consumers’ summer drinking preferences. This season, the newest products quickly gaining attention across the country include wine in a can, catering to the ‘on-the-go,’ outdoor summer lifestyle, and refreshing hard sodas and seltzers.”

Harris conducted a previous poll that showed what drinks people preferred according to age. For millennials between the ages of 21 and 35, beer and spirits were the preferred drink while at home, with spirits being the drink of choice when out. Generation Xers, or those between the ages of 36 and 50, preferred beer whether at home or drinking out. Baby Boomers between the ages of 51 and 69 preferred both wine and spirits and would choose either when out. Those considered mature or 70 or older were wine drinkers who consistently preferred wine whether at a restaurant, bar, at home, or other event. The study also determined that men preferred beer when out while women’s first choice was wine or spirits. Combining those results with the recent study, it seems that more men would prefer a handcrafted, refreshing beer while women might choose a sweet, fruity wine or other spirits. Women’s least popular alcoholic drink when in a restaurant or bar was beer. Sangria was a popular choice for women between the ages of 21 and 35, and the study showed that as people grew older, they preferred table wine.
