‘Secret Life Of Pets’ Proves That Original, Animated Stories Can Still Be Box-Office Hits

The Secret Life of Pets is a surprising hit movie that dominated the box-office during its opening weekend.

According to Variety, the movie generated over $103 million — surpassing the estimated $75 million that it cost to make the film in the first place. If you do the math, this means that the movie was able to turn a major profit within days after it was released in theaters.

Keep in mind that it’s just starting its box-office run and is still months away from generating even more money from digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray sales. As a summer movie, The Secret Life of Pets joined a massive list of other popular films that are currently being featured on a vast number of movie theater screens. What makes the success of The Secret Life of Pets even more impressive, though, is the fact that it was based on an original story.

As explained in the movie’s simplistic title, this family film focuses on the “secret life” that is lived by dogs, cats and their companions within the Animal Kingdom when humans are not around. What do lovable felines and man’s best friends do when their owners are away at work? That question was answered in great detail within this hilarious family film, which was brought to life by an impressive list of actors and actresses within the movie’s cast.

The Secret Life of Pets may have generated a lot of attention at the box-office during its opening weekend simply because it provided something new for moviegoers to enjoy. Think about the vast number of rebooted concepts and sequels that have been released in theaters in recent months.

Even though Pixar recently announced that the studio would be taking a break from sequels after 2019, Finding Dory is still swimming around in theaters, as many fans anticipate the future releases of Toy Story 4,Cars 3, and The Incredibles 2.

The fact that The Secret Life of Pets presented an original story within an animated film filled with colorful characters was apparently greeted by moviegoers with open arms.

When you pay attention to the feedback that the movie has generated from Twitter, it’s clear that fans and critics alike thoroughly enjoy this animated film.

The Secret Lifeof Pets proves that original stories and original feature films can still be major box-office hits and commercial success for movie studios to consider for future development. The only question that remains is: “How will movie studios respond in the years to come? Will they invest in discovering and creating more original stories or revisiting, rebooting and remaking works that have already been created?”

Only time will tell. However, even if the future is filled with sequels to franchises that truly don’t need follow-ups and reboots of classic films that were just fine without them, at least movie fans and critics will be able to cherish such original rarities as The Secret Life of Pets for many years to come.
