Demi Lovato Says She Had To Prove Herself After Leaving Rehab

Demi Lovato opened up recently about feeling the need to prove herself after she left rehab, saying she didn’t want people to think she was a “typical” Hollywood starlet.

The singer said she also didn’t want to continue just writing songs about heartache when there were more important things she could be putting onto paper for her fans.

“I think people looked at me differently. I wanted to prove to people that I wasn’t just a stereotypical Hollywood starlet who goes to rehab and falls back into the trap of the things that got her there. I wanted to make sure that the music that I made was great and that I was passionate about the music that I put out and I sang my heart out. And I also wanted to continue the message of using my platform for more things than just singing about heartbreak. That’s what music is for, is getting you through times, but also using it to inspire people,” Lovato said.

Lovato, who recently split from longtime beau Wilmer Valderrama, says she sticks to a strict schedule these days to keep herself on the right track. For her, that means hitting the gym, attending meetings, and taking care of business.

“I have a great environment here and I take my meetings here, I do whatever I need to and then I go back and I work out some more and then I do what I need to do like go to the studio… My life right now consists of gym, AA meetings and the studio. So that’s pretty much my life. And I love it.”

Demi is currently in the middle of a tour with Nick Jonas; the duo are good friends and have even started a record label together, and Demi says that the time seemed right to start a business partnership.

“Between being friends and then also becoming business partners now with our record label we started, I think we felt like it was the right time to go on tour together. Like, it was a good moment to take things to the next step as far as building our careers as performers, as artists, but also as business people,” Nick Jonas told Entertainment Weekly.

The tour will move through the U.S. and Canada until the middle of September. Demi has been keeping fans who can’t make it to her shows updated via Instagram, sharing photos and videos of the performances on the social media site. Recently, she surprised New York City fans with a duet with Jamie Foxx, who appeared onstage to do a version of “Gold Digger.”

Demi has been showing off her curves both onstage and off lately, sharing sexy photos of herself in bed to promote her new single “Body Say.”

“I feel great in my body today and that’s something I’ve always struggled with, but more importantly, I feel confident in who I am and the things I believe in, what I stand for, the type of artist I want to be,” Demi said.

The singer said last year that she finally feels confident in her own body after years of struggling with body image issues, and she even did a photo shoot for Vanity Fair with no makeup on in order to take control of her image. Demi said that she felt like being authentic helped her to connect with her fans.

“Well, you can’t get any more raw or authentic than no makeup, naked with no Photoshop. I wanted to show people that you can go from having body-image issues your whole life to feeling comfortable enough to show your body to the whole world without Photoshop.”
