‘Captain Marvel’ Gets New Series From Young Adult Author Margaret Stohl

Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers is going to get her own solo movie and will appear on the big screen, scheduled to be released March 8, 2019, from Marvel Studios. But Captain Marvel in the comics is currently getting plenty to do as well, with her own solo series, being commander of the Alpha Flight, a member of the Ultimates, and going up against Tony Stark/Iron Man in Civil War II.

The Captain Marvel solo series is also getting relaunched in 2017, written by young adult novelist Margaret Stohl. She has co-written the best-selling book series Beautiful Creatures and has contributed as a writer for several video game properties. With those geek-friendly credentials, Margaret Stohl writing Captain Marvel seems like a perfectly suitable choice. Stohl spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and talked about Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and her involvement with the character as well as the series.

“It’s fun to be at this moment where you’re getting to introduce the people beyond the comics fans to this powerful woman,” Stohl says. “She will be one of the most popular heroes on the planet, but that’s not something she is very comfortable with.”

The live-action Captain Marvel movie is sure to bring in a wide audience who are unfamiliar with the character as well. If Academy Award-winner Brie Larson really is in talks to accept the role, and it happens, we could possibly see her showing up in the third Avengers installment (Part 1 or Part 2) before she appears in her own solo movie.

But Carol Danvers is becoming much more popular within the world of the Marvel Comics, and this is what Stohl’s run will be focusing on, following the events of Civil War II. If you’ve not been keeping up with the series, there have been a number of hardships that the Marvel heroes, specifically Carol, have suffered through and it sounds like these wounds are still going to be fresh in this new series.

“And of course she’s lost a lot of folks that she’s loved so she has to cope with that, too. That being said, she still has a job to do as commander of the Alpha Flight. Her latest mission being recruiting and training new cadets (which will give us some fun supporting cast members). It’ll also bring with it a mysterious danger that will threaten everything Carol has built.”

Margaret also wasn’t too shy to talk about her own love of geekdom. Not only was she writing for video games — some of which included superhero properties like Fantastic Four and Spider-Man — but she has been attending San Diego Comic Con for years. And Stohl even has history writing for a Marvel Comics character, just in 2015, with Black Widow.

Stohl’s Black Widow: Forever Red was enough to catch the attention of Sana Amanat, Marvel editor, who felt compelled to find something else to write for. Making the transition from Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow to Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel doesn’t sound like it was going to be difficult, since Stohl has a knack for “strong female characters and exploring their inner vulnerabilities.”

“She can’t undo the events of Civil War II, and those events will have changed everything — most of all Carol herself,” Stohl continued. “Captain Marvel has suddenly become a household name — so what now? While she finds herself at the top of her game, she’ll also discover that being there means that game is more dangerous and complicated than ever.”

Michelle Fazekas and Tara Butters are currently writing Captain Marvel, with Kris Anka on the art, and Margaret Stohl will be stepping in as the new writer for the relaunched series in early 2017.
