Donald Trump: Ted Cruz To Speak At Republican National Convention [Video]

Donald Trump and Ted Cruz don’t have a history of shared love. They fought it out tooth and nail for the Republican presidential nomination, and things got pretty ugly. Trump publicly accused Ted Cruz’s dad of some kind of obscure involvement in the JFK assassination.

Ted Cruz responded to the bizarre accusations by calling Donald Trump “utterly amoral” and a “pathological liar.”

When the North Carolina LGBT bathroom bill was a major headline, Donald Trump came out in support of trans rights when it comes to bathroom usage, famously saying he wouldn’t care if Caitlyn Jenner used the ladies room at Trump Tower, which Caitlyn famously did. Following Trump’s words, Ted Cruz came out swinging, criticizing Trump and his “progressive” social beliefs.

“My five-year-old knows the difference between boys and girls. That’s not a reasonable position. It is simply crazy. The idea that grown men would be allowed alone in a bathroom with little girls — you don’t need to be a behavioral psychologist to realize bad things can happen and any prudent person wouldn’t allow that…have we gone stark-raving nuts?”

Now, despite a contentious history, CNN reports that Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are apparently working on some political bonding. According to CNN, Ted Cruz will be speaking at the Republican National Convention later in July, presumably on Donald Trump’s behalf.

On Thursday, Ted Cruz told the media that he had been offered a speaking opportunity at the RNC by Donald Trump himself and that he had accepted the offer. Despite the apparent (albeit suddenly) amicable relationship between Cruz and Trump, Texas Senator Cruz was quick to add that he hadn’t discussed giving Donald Trump an actual endorsement.

“We had a positive and productive meeting this morning with Donald Trump. Donald asked me to speak at the Republican convention and I told him I’d be happy to do so.”

The meeting attended by Cruz and Trump took place at the National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus was also in attendance. In addition to meeting with Senator Ted Cruz, Donald Trump also met with dozens of other Republican Senators.

The meeting between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz was the first time the men have met in person since the end of the contentious Republican primary. A primary that Ted Cruz dropped out of, conceding victory to Trump. A primary that ended over two months ago.

Chairman Reince Priebus refused to go into specifics about the conversation between presumptive Republican nominee Trump and Ted Cruz, but he called the conversation “good.”

“I’ll just say they had a good conversation and it was very polite and cordial and normal. I know they’re working on details.”

Not exactly a rousing endorsement of a potential Trump/Cruz alliance, but it’s better than nothing, especially since the Republican National Convention has been bleeding both sponsors and speakers in the wake of a series of political gaffes by Trump.

According to reports, the Trump/Cruz meeting resulted in Trump and Ted Cruz agreeing to stop working against one another. The pair is planning to come together to work on policy issues. It even sounds like Donald Trump has requested Ted Cruz’s help in selecting judicial nominees, at least according to the report.

Thus far, Ted Cruz has unilaterally refused to publicly endorse his former rival but has not ruled out doing so in the future.

The rivalry between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump reached a fever pitch at the tail end of the Republican primary when the political attacks between the two men became increasingly personal. Donald Trump made a habit of personally attacking and criticizing Cruz and his family, in March even going so far as to threaten to “spill the beans” on Ted Cruz’s wife.

While Donald Trump accused Cruz of slamming his wife, the ad featuring Melania Trump was apparently pushed out by a super-PAC unaffiliated with Cruz or his campaign.

What do you think? Could the new alliance between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump be a turning point in the Trump campaign?
