Philando Castile Shooting Video: New Footage Emerges Of Police Administering CPR On Dying Man As Minnesota Governor Calls For Federal Investigation

A new Philando Castile shooting video has hit the internet, showing police attempting to administer CPR to the 32-year-old man shot during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

Castile ended up dying of his wounds, and a video taken by his girlfriend in the immediate aftermath of the shooting has gone viral and sparked a nationwide backlash. Castile was driving a car that was reportedly pulled over for having a broken taillight. The exact details of what happened next are still unclear, but video taken by Diamond Reynolds showed a bloodied and dying Castile still sitting in the driver’s seat while a frantic officer yelled outside.

“We got pulled over for a busted tail light in the back and he’s covered… they killed my boyfriend,” a calm Reynolds narrated as she filmed a video of the shooting that broadcast live on Facebook. “He’s licensed to carry. He was trying to get out his ID and his wallet out his pocket and he let the officer know that he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet and the officer just shot him in his arm.”

Now, a new video has emerged of the Philando Castile shooting aftermath, showing police attempting to administer aid to Castile. The video was posted to Twitter by Katherine Bleth, who said she lives across the street from where the shooting took place.

The new Philando Castile shooting video seemed to answer one of the main criticisms of the original footage — why it seemed to take police so long to tend to the mortally wounded man. The video taken by Diamond Reynolds showed the original officer who fired the shots still raising his firearm and yelling at the couple even though Castile was barely moving and slipping out of consciousness.

Reynolds was taken from the car shortly after the shooting and placed in the backseat of a police cruiser, where she was handcuffed but continued filming.

The shooting death of Philando Castile sparked outrage both in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and across the nation. A large crowd gathered at the site of the shooting for a peaceful protest, while others gathered in the middle of the night at the home of Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton, chanting Castile’s name and imploring the governor to “wake up.”

Dayton responded almost immediately, calling for a federal investigation into the shooting.

The shooting even prompted a statement from President Barack Obama, who spoke both about Castile’s shooting and the death of Alton Sterling, another black man killed by police this week. Sterling was pinned to the ground by police in a convenience store parking lot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After a police officer shouted that Sterling had a gun, officers opened fire on Sterling, killing him.

Obama noted that he encouraged the U.S. Department of Justice to open a civil rights investigation in Baton Rouge and extended sympathies to the families of both deceased men.

“But regardless of the outcome of such investigations, what’s clear is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents,” Obama wrote. “They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve.”

While action appears to be on the way after the shooting, the disturbing footage continues to reverberate across the internet. The original video of the Philando Castile shooting has already garnered tens of millions of views in less than 24 hours, as well as hundreds of thousands of shares across social media.
