‘Wayward Pines’ Recap: Revealing Flashbacks And The Shocking Demise Of A Major Character [Spoilers]

The latest episode of Wayward Pines answered several questions fans of the show have had since the first season. C.J. “The Duster” Mitchum, played by Djimon Hounsou, was featured in the “Time Will Tell” episode. According to Zap2It, this was the best episode to date, with plenty of artfully crafted flashbacks that were seamlessly interlaced within the current situation the inhabitants of Wayward Pines are facing in with regard to their battle with the Abbies.

The flashbacks provided so many answers as to why the present-day Wayward Pines is in such dire straits. Seen through the eyes of C.J. as he awoke every 20 years to insure everything was running smoothly and to monitor what was going on in the world outside, viewers discovered what happened over the centuries. Hounsou’s performance is riveting, and he does an impressive job of conveying to viewers exactly what he is feeling and experiencing during his lonely sojourn through time.

When C.J. finally awakens David Pilcher (Toby Jones), the founder of Wayward Pines, they venture outside and quickly realize the Abbies are not only still around, but that they have built a settlement in the area. Despite C.J.’s misgivings, Pilcher immediately decides to move ahead with the decision to commence building Wayward Pines regardless of the Abbie settlement. He plans to remove them by any means necessary, and this sets the stage for the many conflicts that will arise. This rash decision comes back to haunt the leaders of Wayward Pines and puts everyone in immediate danger.

When a female Abbie that Megan (Hope Davis) calls “Margaret” (Rochelle Okoye) shows up in Wayward Pines and is captured, Dr. Yedlin (Jason Patric) is quick to notice there is something different about her. Adam Hassler (Tim Griffin) tells the doctor that she is actually the Abbies’ leader, and armed with this valuable information, Dr. Yedlin begins working to communicate with her. As the Abbies continue to mass around the wall surrounding Wayward Pines, he knows that they are outnumbered and that time is running out for all of them. If he can find a way to talk with Margaret, perhaps the certain annihilation of the last remaining population of humans living in Wayward Pines can be averted.

When Jason (Tom Stevens) shows up, all the progress Dr. Yedlin had made with Margaret is ruined. He refuses to listen to reason, and what he does next most likely seals their fate. After Dr. Yedlin tries to interact with a male Abbie and is bitten, Jason kills the three male Abbies they’ve been holding, and Margaret is spared only when the others step in.

After everyone leaves, Megan is seen working at her computer when she suddenly seems to almost lose consciousness. At this point, viewers were probably wondering what was going on with her. She looks down and sees a pool of blood surrounding her wheelchair. Then she realizes she has a deep gash on the back of her leg just above the ankle.

When Dr. Yedlin opened the male Abbie’s cage, Margaret watched him and memorized the code that unlocked the cages. When the time was right, she quietly exited her cage and found a scalpel. She seemed to know that Megan wouldn’t feel anything when she cut her leg and that she would realize what had happened only when it was too late. Margaret watches her die, then calmly walks out of the lab.

If this week’s episode is any indication of what is coming, then fans of Wayward Pines won’t want to miss the final few episodes. As Dr. Yedlin and Hassler scramble to find Margaret on the next episode titled “Pass Judgment,” the Abbies continue to mass around the walls of Wayward Pines and Jason receives devastating news. Margaret knows her way around Wayward Pines since she lived in the area before Pilcher forced them off the land, and finding her won’t be easy. Although many questions have been answered, it is a sure bet that more will arise before the season finale.

For those who missed it and want to catch up, Wayward Pines posted a link on Facebook to the previous episode.
