Deon Johnson Arrest: Top Alabama Recruit Arrested On Rape Charges

ESPN is reporting that Deon Johnson, a star wide receiver and defensive back who committed to Alabama earlier this year, was arrested last week for second-degree felony rape and sodomy.

According to police reports, Johnson, 18, was arrested in Daphne, Alabama on Thursday around 3:30pm. Lt. Jud Beedy, spokesman for the Daphne Police Department, said the athlete turned himself in after it was revealed he had sexual relations with a juvenile between the age of 12 and 16. Said Lt. Beedy:

“Through the investigation, we had enough probable cause to charge Mr. Johnson with rape in the second degree and sodomy in the second degree. The basis of the charge is the age of the person. And that is less than the age of consent which is 16,” he said. “And he (Johnson) exceeds the 24-month requirement meaning he is more than 24 months older.”

Johnson, the 13th ranked football player in the state of Alabama according to Rivals.com, committed to play for the Crimson Tide in April over offers from LSU, Auburn, and Mississippi State. It’s unclear if this situation will have any impact on his standing with the University.

During his junior season at Spanish Fort High School, the 6-foot-1 reciever put together some impressive numbers, hauling in 63 passes for 19 total touchdowns. Bleacher Report notes that in the first game of his senior year, Deon picked up right where he left off, gaining 110 yards of total offense including a 60-yard touchdown catch.
