‘The Bachelorette’ 2016 Spoilers: Derek Peth Defends JoJo Fletcher

Former The Bachelorette 2016 contestant Derek Peth slammed rumors that the latest ABC reality series is scripted and fake. While he admitted that some of the scenes, especially his one-on-one date with Season 12 lead JoJo Fletcher, seemed a little too perfect, Peth assured fans that everything is as real as it gets.

In an interview with Bustle, Derek Peth shared that he was pretty surprised with how real The Bachelorette turned out to be. He said that he was “very skeptical” to go into the show. It was actually his younger sister, a longtime fan of the series, who sent in his application without even telling him. Peth admitted that he had not watch a single episode of The Bachelorette before he was on the show.

Peth shared that he would often get stopped by fans on the street, asking about the “fakeness” of the series. He insisted that he shared a real connection with Fletcher, and the series was not just an elaborate scheme to toy with the fans’ emotions to get higher ratings.

“It was not some fake BS. If you haven’t been on the show you don’t understand, there are only so many things that you can really say outside of just… it was very real.”

The Bachelorette 2016 alum also said that fans are giving him too much credit if they thought he was just being a “good actor” on the show. Derek Peth, however, admitted that the producers had to “compress” (not edit) some things to make everything fit in an episode. He said that some aspects of his personality were not shown on television because it was just not relevant to the show. All that mattered was how each of the contestant related to JoJo.

Going back, Derek wished that fans got to see his “goofy sarcastic side.” Over all, he shared that he was happy with the way he was portrayed on The Bachelorette 2016.

“Some people were worse than they actually were portrayed, even though they were portrayed pretty poorly, and most of the rest of us, I think it’s a pretty straight-shoot, exactly our personalities, just in a compressed format.”

Chad Rookstool, JoJo Fletcher’s ex-boyfriend, however is not at all thrilled with how he was portrayed on The Bachelorette. An insider told In Touch Weekly that Fletcher ended up apologizing to him after episode 5 aired.

In the June 20 episode, the contestants got ahold of the magazine, which contained Rookstool’s exclusive interview about his relationship with Fletcher. He claimed that the two of them got back together after she got dumped by The Bachelor’s Ben Higgins, only to break up again after it was confirmed that Fletcher is going to be the next Bachelorette.

In the same interview, Rookstool also said that Fletcher had been faking her feelings for Higgins, adding that she spent many nights crying since she cannot stop thinking about them and their dog.

“JoJo told me, ‘Chad, come on, you know it was TV.’ I think she just got sucked up in the show rather than actually trying to have legit feelings,” Rookstool said.

An insider close to Chad Rookstool said that the Dallas-based salon owner was “pissed off” with the way he was portrayed on the show. JoJo Fletcher reportedly tried to apologize to him after the episode aired and blamed it all on the producers.

“But she’d better be careful, because Chad still has all the texts from her — and he’s willing to use them against her to prove she’s lying,” the insider warned.
