NBA Rumors: Chicago Bulls Could Sign Rajon Rondo In NBA Free Agency

The Chicago Bulls have been very busy this off-season, but there is a good chance that they are far from being done. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the off-season holds for them, although they appear to have their eyes on one free agent in particular right now. After trading Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks, there is a strong need for an upgrade at the point guard position.

Jose Calderon is currently penciled in as the starting point guard, with Jerian Grant backing him up. Chicago could very well sign a better point guard than either of those two guys in the next few days.

According to a report from K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, the Bulls have met with free agent point guard Rajon Rondo and have interest in signing him.

Last season with the Sacramento Kings, Rondo seemed to keep his head on straight and get his career back on track. He averaged 11.9 points, 11.7 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game throughout the season. Rondo shot 45.4 percent from the field overall and looked like the floor general that he was during his Boston Celtics days.

That being said, the Bulls would be naive to go into a potential deal with Rondo without concerns. He has been a head case in years past, especially during his tenure with the Dallas Mavericks. Chicago would be making a massive upgrade to their back-court, but if he doesn’t get along with the team or coaching staff, the situation could blow up quickly.

At 30-years-old, Rondo still has plenty of basketball left to play in his prime. It was obvious last season that he is far from being done.

Chicago currently has a solid roster that should compete for a playoff spot. If they want to build around Jimmy Butler and become a threat to make a postseason run, Rondo could be the answer for them. He would make life much easier for Butler and would help set up the rest of his teammates with better shots as well.

There is no telling what kind of money it would take to lock Rondo up to a two or three-year deal. Free agents have been getting overpaid from the opening few minutes of free agency and Rondo is one of the best point guards available.

Rondo has a lot of other teams interested in signing him as well at this point in time. Sacramento could still try to bring him back, although that option appears to be cooling each hour. Chicago would likely give Rondo the best chance to play for a playoff contender and they could likely come up with the money to give him the type of deal that he wants.

It will be interesting to see what Rondo ends up doing when the time to choose a new team comes around. Chicago is a very good suitor for him, but he has not always been known for making a choice that is easiest on him.

Expect to hear plenty of rumors about both the Bulls and Rondo in the next 48 hours as free agency continues. Rondo will likely make a decision at some point in the next few days, although he could drag his decision out through July 4th. Chicago certainly seems like a good fit for him and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him sign with them.

Do you think the Chicago Bulls should sign Rajon Rondo to be their starting point guard? Would he help power them back into the Eastern Conference playoffs? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below!
