A Look Back On The 3 Main Ladies Of ‘Devil Wears Prada’ Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, And Meryl Streep On Its 10th Anniversary
This week has been the 10th anniversary of iconic fashion-related film Devil Wears Prada. To celebrate the decade-long portrayal of Anna Wintour’s life and legacy in the fashion world, here are the ladies who mattered the most in the film and where they are now.
Anne Hathaway
Devil Wears Prada is a take on the true life story of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who has been perceived as a cold-hearted, strict workaholic back in the day. Anne Hathaway played as the charming, no-fashion-sense journalist who partnered with Meryl Streep’s character in the movie. Hathaway portrayed Lauren Weisberger in real life.
Anne Hathaway was just a shabby-looking character before she went in and worked for Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly. But as she discovered and learned about the fashion industry, she began to appreciate it even more.
After 10 years, Anne Hathaway is now the one giving fashion advice to women. In her Instagram post to commemorate the film’s 10-year anniversary, Hathaway wrote, “What else can I say about the movie that changed my life? Don’t let this make you feel old—good style is eternal.”Emily Blunt
Anne Hathaway’s character would not shine without a good old snobby villain. In Devil Wears Prada, that would have to be Emily Blunt’s character, Emily Charlton.
Emily was Miranda’s top secretary and she loved the fashion world. However, after years of working for “the boss,” she never got the promotion she has always wanted. When Andy Sachs, Anne Hathaway’s character, was being given a lot of exposure, that is when she decided to make it a terrible experience for her to work in the office.
But, after a decade, Emily Charlton has transitioned from that small-minded, snotty secretary to the amazing actress which Emily Blunt has become.
Emily Blunt is now happily married to actor John Krasinski and has starred in many box-office and award-winning films over the past years. Since 2012, Emily Blunt has been covering roles of differing varieties from action, to thriller to animation and the whimsical.
Blunt has been in The Five-Year Engagement, a rom-com film with Jason Segel. She also joined Looper, The Wind Rises and Edge of Tomorrow. By 2015, Emily Blunt has played as the protagonist of Oscar-nominated film Sicario. For this year, she is also the lead of a novel-based movie, The Girl on the Train. So much for being just an ignored assistant now, right?
Finally, The Superstar, Meryl Streep
Everyone knows of this legendary actress, but her performance in Devil Wears Prada has been one of the most memorable. She has practically played Anna Wintour and to everyone’s surprise, Wintour said she appreciated the portrayal.
“I’m a very decisive person. I think it’s actually helpful to people that you are working with, that you can make decisions. So, if Meryl seemed somewhat strong, I respect that.”
Though there are still far differences from the real Anna Wintour, it has been reported that she actually expects her staff to dress in style. Wintour stated this herself that though they do not “dictate” a dress code for everyone, she still “expects” them to wear nice “because they love fashion.”
On the other hand, Meryl Streep has not only been one of the icons of the fashion world, she has stamped herself as one of the best actresses of our time.
Since Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep has not slowed down in the entertainment industry. In fact, she has been nominated and awarded for her multiple performances in minor and major awards bodies like the Golden Globes and the Oscar. To both of these women, success has really come in handy.
Just like what Miranda said, “Everybody wants to be us.”
