Chelsea Handler Opens Up About Her Abortions, Over Twenty Years Later She Has ‘No Regrets’

Chelsea Handler is usually very candid, but no one expected her to be this open. The Netflix TV host, who has been getting more political on her new streaming show, opened up on her choice to get two abortions when she was a teen.

In a published article in Playboy, Chelsea Handler opened up about the difficult decision she had to make at the age of 16, and how she feels about it over 20 years later. As expected, Handler doesn’t mince words when discussing her decision to have two abortions and her feelings now.

“I happened to f**k up twice at the age of 16. I’m grateful that I came to my senses and was able to get an abortion legally without risking my health or bankrupting myself or my family. I’m 41 now. I don’t ever look back and think, God, I wish I’d had that baby.”

Given the current political climate surrounding abortion, and it isn’t hard to see why Chelsea Handler would choose this specific time to speak out about her decision.

Up until a few days ago, the state of Texas was trying to shut down clinics that perform abortions in hopes to “crack down” and limit women’s right to choose. Pro-choice activists won the battle when the ruling was thrown out of court. This ruling was important because we may see a huge wave of impact for other states that hope to shut down more clinics.

In Handler’s essay, she tackles how dire the situation has become in some states, who are doing everything in their power to prevent women the right to choose.

“It’s infuriating to hear politicians make bogus promises about overturning this ruling that has protected us for more than 40 years. It’s infuriating to hear them pander to the Christian right with promises they have no chance of keeping.. And it’s even more infuriating to watch politicians find ways to subvert Roe v. Wade, passing lesser laws that close clinics or restrict abortion access for women. At least five states—Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming—currently have only one clinic left within their borders.”

Despite that, Handler says that she doesn’t think that we will go backwards in history and our progress.

“We’re too far ahead of the game. Once you go forward in history, you don’t go backward. That would be like the government saying, ‘Okay, we’re taking away your right to vote too.’ You can’t introduce a black person and be like, ‘Oh, I just got a slave!’ That era is over.”

Speaking out about politics is a new era for Handler, who previously had her own show on E! which was more celebrity based. This talk show on Netflix gives Handler the freedom to explore many topics that are being heavily discussed in America. For instance, the upcoming election and how it has an impact on everyone.

In one segment, she went to Mexico to speak with teenage girls about their thoughts on Donald Trump. At the end of the segment, Handler infused her unique sense of humor, as she paraded through the streets with a Donald Trump pinata and egged the girls on.

She has at least one segment about the presidential election on her show.

“Now, from what I can gather, I’m almost positive that this is an election year, so you might not know it but you need me. Without my insight, how will the American electorate ever be able to decide between a highly qualified woman with impeccable credentials and a bankrupt, misogynistic racist orange a**hole?”
