Anton Yelchin’s Funeral Was Private, Attended Only By Family And Friends

Anton Yelchin’s funeral was one that hadn’t been advertised, and probably for a good reason. Westboro Baptist Church has been known to target celebrity funerals, and Yelchin’s family and friends didn’t want anyone ruining their time of mourning.

The funeral for the late Star Trek actor was held at an undisclosed location, so even fans couldn’t attend. It isn’t even clear if any celebrities had been there.

Yelchin’s final film, Star Trek Beyond, will be dedicated to his passing, much like Furious 7 was after the death of Paul Walker. Due to its July release date, the film might not reflect his passing in more than perhaps a credit. Filming additional scenes may be pushing it at this point.

There doesn’t appear to be any foul play involved in Anton’s death. The fault might lie with the manufacturers of his Jeep Grand Cherokee. There had been a recall on the vehicle over a faulty gear shift, which was said to have a tendency of sticking in neutral when the display said it was in park. It had rolled downhill into his driveway, pinning him against the gate, where he was stuck and died of “blunt traumatic asphyxia,” according to his death certificate.

Little is known of the details of Anton Yelchin’s death, including how long he’d been there before he was discovered dead earlier this month. He had arranged a meeting with friends that morning and hadn’t shown up, leading them to wonder what happened. His body was found wedged between his jeep and the fence outside his home, where it is said he died maybe a minute after the impact.

Anton Yelchin was killed in the accident at a mysterious age as well. Funeral attendees may have noticed that many young celebrities die at the age of 27, and Yelchin had been acting long before he joined the growing list. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Kurt Cobain are among them. Jonathan Brandis killed himself at that same age, his friends having said he was depressed about his acting career not going anywhere. American baseball player Steve Olin was killed at the age of 27 in a boating accident.

Anton Yelchin’s funeral came early in his career, having had a long list of acting credits to his name before even achieving global fame with J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. He was also in Hearts in Atlantis and was the voice of Clumsy Smurf in the recent CG animated Smurfs films. Star Trek Beyond is only one of several films he finished before he was found dead at his home in Los Angeles. Those who worked with him called him brilliant and hilarious, with a wide range of talent that only began to see the limelight in 2009.

For reasons stated earlier, it is unlikely that Anton Yelchin will receive a public funeral. His fans will be left wanting a chance to say goodbye to Chekov, but they may need to settle for catching Star Trek Beyond on July 22 to pay their respects.
