‘Lego Movie 2’ Delayed Until 2019—Is ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ The Reason For Delay?

The sequel the 2014 animated Lego Movie will be pushed back to 2019.

This is a massive delay for the sequel considering that it is set to launch on May 18, 2018. There were no announced reasons yet in as to why they pushed the dates back, but if they will premiere the movie on Feb. 8, 2019, it would come close to exactly five years after the first movie was launched. At the same time, it is a good pace since they will have another franchise installment, The Lego Batman Movie, which will hit the theaters on Feb. 10, 2017.

Because of this adjustment, fans speculate that it could be because of the close launch of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. Infinity War is set to premiere on May 4, 2018, two weeks ahead the original Lego Movie 2 launch.

This is a possibility. Lego Movie 2 is a production by Warner Bros., a direct competitor of Marvel Studios.

Marvel, being owned by Disney, has been going head-to-head with Warner Bros, the production company that produces the DC universe saga.

After Marvel continues to bankroll on the ever-growing fan base of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Warner Bros. just had a mixed review on the Batman V Superman film.

Because of the very close theater launch for yet another Avengers movie, Warner Bros. might be taking a calculated risk here by pushing back their animated film. Aside from that, they should have already launched the Lego Batman Movie ahead of time. If they still push for that original timeline, the animated film might be run over by Marvel’s 4-week stay in the box office.

However, the Lego Movie franchise is no joke as well. It was one of the highest-rated animated films of 2014. With IMDB giving it a 7.8 out of 10, Rotten Tomatoes a 96 out of a hundred and a general 4.5 out of 5 rating from Amazon, The Lego Movie is not something Marvel should take lightly.

During 2014, it also amassed to about $469.2 million in the box office. The DVD version of the film was then released on June 17, 2014. After that, it was awarded multiple times at Kerrang! For the Best Film Award, the AACTA Awards for Best Visual Effects, BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film and more.

Meanwhile, the other possible reasons for the delay could be the actual production of the Lego Movie 2. According to Screenrant, the film’s script writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are currently busy working on Disney’s Spider-Man remake. The duo are also working on The Flash. On top of that, they are also set to direct Star War’s Han Solo anthology movie. The Han Solo movie was actually scheduled to be released just a week after the original The Lego Movie 2 launch.

Lord and Miller reportedly completed the script last year, but it could take some time to translate that into the planning of the production. The entire production team also need to balance the casting and production needs together with the two other Lego movies set for release in the next few years, The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie.

With doing animation films, there is a lot of graphics work that take place. But, Miller told Indiewire that the Lego franchise is quite a fun project because it offers “infinite possibilities.”

“You could tell any story with LEGO and it was such a challenge to find one story to tell and then pack the edges with extra stuff.”
