Victoria Azarenka Beats Sam Stosur, Advances To Semi-Finals At US Open

Victoria Azarenka entered the US Open as the number one tennis player in the world and she’s living up to her ranking. Azarenka earned her first semi-final appearance today by beating defending champion Sam Stosur.

The AFP reports that Azarenka secured her spot at the top of the rankings with her win over Stosur. But the 23-year-old from Belarus isn’t satisfied with the number on eranking.

Azarenka said: “I don’t want to stop yet.”

Azarenka will face Marion Bartoli (11th seed) or Maria Sharapova (3rd seed) during the semi-final round. The tennis player is confident that she can win the US Open but admitted that the competition is only going to get harder as the tournament goes on.

Azarenka said:

“She played amazing. The level was so much harder today. She made me play my best… We both showed some excellent tennis… You could feel the pressure all the time. We really both gave it all. We fought really hard, making each other run like crazy… Physically we were already giving all on every point,” she said. “You accept to take that risk or take that challenge. You cannot wait for a mistake. You have to make your opportunities.”

The ball may be in Azarenka’s court at the moment but the AFP reports that history is not on her side. A women’s top seeded player has not won a Grand Slam title since Serena Williams won Wimbledon in 2010. For the US Open, a top seed hasn’t won since 2007 when Justine Henin earned victory.
