Noah Galvin’s Controversial Interview Could Cost The Whole ‘Real O’Neals’ Cast

Noah Galvin opened his mouth and it could empty his co-stars’ wallets. The openly-gay Real O’Neals star made headlines last week after a controversial interview with New York magazine’s Vulture in which he shattered Hollywood’s “glass closet,” and the backlash was bad enough that ABC has considered reducing the episode order for the second season of his sitcom.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Noah Galvin blindsided the network with his shocking comments about gay Hollywood during the interview, which was set up by a personal publicist as part of an Emmy push for the 22-year-old star.

After slamming casting agents for discrimination against gay actors, Galvin called out actor Arrow star Colton Haynes for the way he publicly came out in an Entertainment Weekly interview –calling it “f*****g p***y b******t” among other niceties—and he described Eric Stonestreet’s Emmy-winning performance on Modern Family as “a caricature of a caricature” of a gay character. Galvin’s damning comments about filmmaker Bryan Singer, in which he accused the X-Men director of preying on underage boys at house parties, were removed from the article, but the damage was already done.

Noah Galvin issued an apology within hours after the article went live, admitting that his careless comments hurt the LGBTQ community and the entire entertainment industry, but the bad press was enough cause for ABC to pause. THR reports that immediately following the shocking interview, a reduced episode order was considered for the already low-rated series, which was gifted a second season last month. An executive producer who had spent four years getting the series on the air reportedly begged the network not to take action, THR’s source said. ABC has not yet commented on the fate of the show.

In addition, Galvin has been repeatedly warned about matters pertaining to “ego and entitlement” on The Real O’Neals set, which is interesting considering the short-lived sitcom is what put him on the map. Noah Galvin has very few acting credits ahead of the ABC comedy about a gay teen in a conservative family.

A source for The Real O’Neals told THR that it will be an awkward reunion for the cast, which also includes Jay R. Ferguson and Martha Plimpton, when they do reconvene later this summer, because Galvin has now put them all in jeopardy. Even if the show doesn’t lose any episodes, it may lose some fans.

“He caused a grade-A s**t show. ABC screamed at him all afternoon,” the source said.

Indeed, damage control will be in full force as Galvin tries to recover from his controversial Q&A. In his initial apology, which can be seen below, Noah Galvin admitted that he is “new to this” and promised to be more thoughtful in interviews going forward.

Haynes responded to Noah’s mea culpa via an Instagram message slamming Galvin for judging him and wishing him luck, because, well, he’s going to need it, Stonestreet did not respond to Galvin’s apology, but his Modern Family husband, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, had his back.

Noah made a separate apology to Singer, admitting he had never even been to his house and had no basis for the reckless allegations about underage boys at his pool parties. The director didn’t directly respond back, but it was reported that his lawyers were involved in order to get Galvin’s original comments removed from the article before his official retraction.

Noah Galvin returns to The Real O’Neals this fall on ABC. Take a look at the video below to see Galvin talking about the second season of The Real O’Neals.
