Nick Jonas Reveals He Was The Main Reason For The End Of The Jonas Brothers

Singer Nick Jonas has publicly admitted that he was more than just the catalyst for the disbandment of the Jonas Brothers — he was the main reason for the split. Sitting down with Andy Cohen on Tuesday night’s Watch What Happens Live, the 23-year-old pop phenom shared the surprising news as part of an interview to promote his latest LP, Last Year Was Complicated, finally ending the myriad of questions that have followed him in regards to the breakup of the family collective in October 2013.

“I was [the one who initiated the split],” he explained to Cohen. “It was a very tough conversation, and it left the family kind of shaken up for a while. I mean, we were about to start a tour.”

The excursion in question, a continuation of their LiVe Tour, was meant to promote V (the Roman numeral for “five”), the band’s first release outside of the Disney music subsidiary, Hollywood Records. Two singles from the LP, “Pom Poms” and “First Time,” had been well-received by both long-standing Jonas Brothers fans and music critics. However, once the band parted ways, it was decided by all parties that V would never see the light of day (an EP containing a handful of recordings from V was released to dedicated fans through a now-defunct online fan club in November 2013).

In an interview with Good Morning America just days after their split, all three Jonas Brothers sat with interviewer Robin Roberts to explain that it was ultimately a group decision to things professionally in hopes of saving their tight-knit bond as a family.

“In a nutshell, I [was the one that] said, ‘Look, I feel like we’ve had some complications within the group for a long time without addressing them,’ ” Nick stated, while brothers Joe and Kevin nodded in agreement. ”’I think this train will fall off the tracks without really getting real about some of the concerns and some of the limitations that we may feel as individuals in the group.'”

“I think it was [just] time [for] the Jonas Brothers [to] come to an end,” Kevin added.

Since that end, all three brothers have flourished quite well in both the entertainment field and life. Middle brother Joe Jonas is now involved with a new group, DNCE. Their 2015 single, “Cake By The Ocean,” has been noted by several music publications as being the most obvious choice for this year’s “song of the summer.” Their first EP, Swaay, has also done quite well, allowing the group to garner another hit with the song, “Toothbrush,” and an opening spot on fellow pop singer Selena Gomez’s Revival Tour.

Eldest brother Kevin Jonas has taken a bit of a backseat when it comes to music, but he is just as prominent in the celebrity world as his two brothers. Following his marriage to hairdresser Danielle Deleasa in 2009, the couple starred on their own reality series, Married to Jonas, for two seasons on the E! Network. Jonas also appeared on the seventh season of Celebrity Apprentice — the 14th overall of the franchise, and the last to be hosted by presidential candidate Donald Trump — and is currently awaiting the birth of his second child with Deleasa.

As for where things stand now with his former band mates, Nick says that just as he hoped it would, his family came first.

“We’re good now,” he said to Cohen. “I have a beautiful niece. My brother has a family. Joe’s band DNCE is doing very well. It’s good for everybody and it’s good that it happened because I think we all grew from it, but it was very challenging for a little while.” Check out the moment in full here.
