Samantha Bee was furious with Florida politicians who oppose gun control after the Orlando shooting in this NSFW clip from her TBS show Full Frontal.
“After a massacre, the standard operating procedure is you stand on stage and deliver some well-meaning words about how we will get through this together, how love wins, how love conquers hate. That is great, that is beautiful, but you know what? F— it,” Bee said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I am too angry for that. Love does not win unless we start loving each other enough to start fixing our f—ing problems.”
Other late night hosts were much more calm and sorrowful in their responses to the massacre in Orlando. Conan O’Brien called for a ban on assault rifles in his statement on the shooting.
“I have really tried very hard over the years not to bore you with what I think,” O’Brien said on his Monday night show, according to Business Insider. “However I am a father of two, I like to believe I have a shred of common sense, and I simply do not understand why anybody in this country is allowed to purchase and own a semi-automatic assault rifle. It makes no sense to me. These are weapons of war and they have no place in civilian life.”
The Orlando shooting killed 49 people and injured 53. It occurred at a gay nightclub in Orlando, and it was carried out by Omar Mateen, who pledged allegiance to ISIS. He was carrying a pistol and a semi-automatic rifle.
Samantha Bee showed a clip of Florida Governor Rick Scott saying the best thing that can be done after this massacre is to pray, while she thinks it’s more important to work for change than pray for it. She also showed a clip of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio saying the shooting was just “Orlando’s turn,” to which she replied that we shouldn’t have to just take turns letting mass shootings happen in different states.
Samantha Bee said that while politicians are saying that this shooting could happen anywhere and that there isn’t much that can be done about them, Australia hasn’t had a mass shooting since it passed strict gun control measures in 1996.
Bee pointed out Australia doesn’t have a Second Amendment, so the government can’t get rid of guns entirely, “but can’t we get semi-automatic assault rifles out of the hands of civilians?” she asked. “Sam B. wants to take your guns away. Yes. The ones that mow down a room full of people in seconds? Yes, I do want to take those guns away.”
The same semi-automatic AR-15 that was used in Orlando was used in mass shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, in Aurora, Colorado, in 2012, and in San Bernardino, California, in 2015, according to Quartz. It is modeled after a gun used in war zones, and it is the most popular rifle in the United States.
Monday night’s episode of Full Frontal wasn’t the first time Samantha Bee has done an angry monologue on her show. In May, Bee directed her frustration toward Bernie Sanders supporters who were very angry with how the Nevada caucus had turned out and had claimed the election was being rigged against Sanders. She said this wasn’t the case and mocked their behavior.
“The fact is nobody stole the Nevada election—he just lost!” she said, according to Mother Jones.
Bee was originally a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, but she got her own show on TBS when Trevor Noah took over for Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. Many have said she’s been a refreshing new voice in a medium mostly populated by men.
