‘Finding Dory’ Transgender Character Confirmed: Ellen DeGeneres Reveals Which Disney Character Will Debut

All speculations that Finding Dory is having a transgender character in the animated film can stop now because it’s confirmed as true. BuzzFeed reports that Ellen DeGeneres announced that a transsexual character in the movie will be in the script.

DeGeneres revealed in her Finding Dory spoilers that a stingray will be sting-Rhonda. News of this emerges after rumors surfaced that an LGBT couple would be featured in the trailer. Two women were seen in the preview with a baby, alluding to the possibility that a lesbian couple is indeed in the film.

“Actually, I’ll tell you a little secret, there’s a stingray that’s becoming sting-Rhonda, so there’s a trans sting in the movie,” Ellen told USA Today.

Disney Pixar hasn’t commented on the details, and Ellen was uncertain herself regarding the lesbian couple question.

“I don’t mind the question and I don’t know if it’s true or not, or if she has a bad short haircut. Who knows if she is a lesbian?” the comedienne and talk show host said.

Ellen did say that if a lesbian woman is depicted with a short haircut, she’ll find it “offensive.” Just because a woman has a bad haircut, it doesn’t automatically identify her as a homosexual, she insists. Regardless of that, Ellen is just happy that it appears Disney is stepping up its game and representing the LGBT community in a film.

Director Andrew Stanton largely remained ambiguous on the hot topic, saying “there’s no right or wrong answer.”

Ellen DeGeneres thinks addressing LGBT is “great.”

“I think everything that we see in the media, whether it’s television or film or anything you see, should represent everything that’s happening in the world,” DeGeneres said at press conference held recently, reports the Independent. “I think everybody in the world should be seen and represented.”

As the Independent explains in its lengthier report, Disney was “shamed” by GLAAD earlier this year for not representing the LGBT community better in its films. The company came under intense pressure by the studio and its fans for “failing” to stay current with audiences.

If reports are true, there’s definitely representation of the LGBT community in Finding Dory with a transgender character and most likely a gay couple.

Additionally, there was the announcement of Frozen 2 that called on writers to make Queen Elsa the Disney’s first LGBT princess under the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. Similarly, #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend has also shown a strong following.

Other signs that Disney will write in supporting gay characters was recently implied. For example, antelopes Bucky and Pronk were seen arguing like a married couple and sharing the same surname, Oryx Antlerson, in Zootopia. Also sauna owner Oaken in Frozen shows Kristoff a very brief picture of his husband and children.

Forbes published a review on Finding Dory, claiming it will be the highest grossing film of the summer — at least domestically. It may even top the Disney blockbuster of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, which brought in $392 million.

Aside from the writer’s opinion of the film, nothing is given away in regards to a lesbian couple or a transgender character present in the film. With all of the hype and curiosity revolving around these two elements American audiences are eager to see, reviews are sticking mainly to the movie’s general appeal on an emotional level.

Are you happy to hear that a transgender stingray will be in the new Disney movie?

Finding Dory hits theaters on June 16.
