Kim Kardashian Begs For Gun Control On Twitter

Kim Kardashian West is getting plenty of attention on Twitter because of her recent tweets about gun control. First, Kim sent a tweet on Sunday, June 12, expressing her sympathy for the people affected in the mass Orlando shootings. The tweets and re-tweets that followed, however, focused on Kardashian’s passion for gun control.

As reported by ET, Kim used her large social media platform — Kardashian has nearly 46 million Twitter followers — to express the reasons why she feels there need to be stronger measures in place for people who want to purchase guns.

Following Kim’s initial tweet about the Orlando shootings, Kardashian re-tweeted a tweet that summarized how troubling it was that the shooter was able to legally purchase guns, given Omar Mateen’s history with the FBI.

As reported by ABC News, Mateen was a person on the FBI’s radar. Omar was officially on the terror watch list of the FBI and had been removed, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. The 29-year-old had been interviewed by the FBI at least three times during the previous three years. Yet and still, despite those circumstances, Mateen was able to legally purchase his guns — with no red flags being raised at the time of purchase.

Next, Kardashian re-tweeted a tweet written by Troye Sivan, the singer of the popular “Youth” song. That tweet spoke of the mass shooting that occurred in Australia.

As reported by USA Today, Australia’s worst mass shooting in their history happened on April 28, 1996. On that day, 35 people were gunned down and killed, with 23 additional individuals being injured in Port Arthur, Tasmania. As a result, less than two weeks later, the Australian government created a buyback program to get approximately 20 percent of the guns in Australia off the streets.

That measure helped get more than 600,000 semi-automatic weapons and other guns into the hands of Australian officials. It also banned the private sale of guns and had a big impact on lessening suicides (down 74 percent) and gun-related deaths, which were down 59 percent.

Similar measures are being urged by some folks in the U.S. who would like to see stricter gun laws. Count Kim in as a person who wants to make sure guns don’t get into the hands of terrorists who are bent on killing large amounts of people due to radical beliefs.

Kardashian pointed out that even if a person is suspected of being a terrorist, they can still potentially legally purchase guns, as did Omar. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Mateen could have still been on the Terrorist Screening Database and still purchased the assault weapons that he used to kill 50 people in Orlando.

Kim called it a loophole in gun laws that needs to be closed in order to try to prevent future murders.

Kim’s passion for the issue and frustration came through loud and clear as she called the murders senseless. Kardashian asked when the gun laws would change. As expected, Kim got a plethora of responses on social media to her gun control tweets. Some of those responses can be seen below.

“Kim Kardashian for president.”

how many armed bodyguards do you have with guns? Want those taken away?”

“KIM 2016.”

“When Kanye’s president #2020.”

“I still can’t believe nothing has been done about the gun law in America, praying things will change.”

“Gun control isn’t the problem, it’s the person behind the trigger.”

“Does Kanye have a gun? Do you? Or do y’all prefer your bodyguards have one? I can’t afford a bodyguard….will you spot?”

“Agreed. Let’s at least get some teeth into the background checks!”
