‘Battlefield 1’ At E3: Gameplay Mechanics, New In-Game Footage, & More [Video]

Fans who were excited for Battlefield 1 news will be pleased to know that EA has delivered.

New in-game footage for Battlefield 1 was released today through presentation at E3, the annual convention where developers from all over the world come together to showcase video games that are in store for fans as the year goes on. EA and Dice are stating that Battlefield 1 will be one of the biggest shooters to be released, and representatives have given us confirmation that 64-man battles will be as chaotic in this Battlefield as its previous installments.

Guests of E3 were able to get their hands on a live build of Battlefield 1. StoneMountain64 and Neebs Gaming, celebrity Youtube personalities, were in charge of opposing teams. While the trailer showcased new environments, E3 allowed various celebrities and developers to play live matches for players to get a look at what’s in store.

Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of the battlefield in Battlefield 1 is the weather. At any point during the fight, the environment is liable to change. A clear day may turn into a cloudy one, and day may turn into night. There’s even a rain element, where players will have to choose their advance carefully in the face of visibility issues. Graphics play a part in this, as soldiers will be able to see water on weapons and surfaces as they do battle. If you’re playing a sniper class, the elements may prevent clear shots against the opposition. In that regard, switching class may be necessary to be successful in Battlefield 1 skirmishes.

Buildings and other structures are fully destructible in Battlefield 1. Walls can be destroyed with enough damage, and exploding vehicles will level whatever they happen to land on. In a report by PCGamesN, the “Behemoth” is also a large part of this aspect of the game. Aptly named, this gigantic vehicle is a zeppelin that can turn the tides of battle for a losing team. Mounted with machine guns, it can easily shift a loss into a potential victory. If the opposing team manages to bring the Behemoth down, however, it appears that there is no set place where it will fall; wherever the zeppelin descends and crashes, that is where it will remain. Players will have to fight through the wreckage, adding yet another gameplay element to Battlefield 1.

Classes in Battlefield 1 will play a major role. While some players choose to deploy as infantrymen, others may want to play a medic or support class. Items available to players include ammo bags, medic packs, and even revival syringes to keep players in the fight. There appear to be tools for every situation, making it possible to deal with soldiers on foot or by vehicle. Anti-vehicle grenades, trip mines, and turrets are just a few of what can be used in Battlefield 1. There are also classes that are dedicated to vehicle combat; at specific points, players will spawn into the map with their respective vehicles already geared and ready to go.

It was reported by The Verge that tanks and horses are available in Battlefield 1, as well. Tanks will come with light, medium, and heavy versions. The light tank will hold a single individual, the medium will hold three, and the heavy tank will hold a maximum of five players. Tanks are able to be repaired by soldiers at the cost of not being able to perform other actions while doing so, forcing players to think on the fly and adjust to the advance of opposing forces. Air vehicles can hold multiple players as well, giving dogfights a more dynamic feel.

Battlefield 1 looks extremely promising, and EA Dice has stated that there is far more to be discussed and revealed as time goes on.
