‘Mysteries Of Laura’ Is Canceled, But What Was The Plan For Season 3?

Mysteries of Laura has been canceled and will never have its third season, but that doesn’t mean a third season wasn’t planned, and the answers left by the Season 2 cliffhangers weren’t planned by the writers of Mysteries of Laura. Some serious details were left up in the air, especially concerning the relationship between Laura, played by Debra Messing, and her ex husband, Jake, played by Josh Lucas. Though the show has been canceled, showrunner Jeff Rake shared details of what he planned for Season 3 of Mysteries of Laura with fans.

Mysteries of Laura wasn’t the only police procedural canceled this year, as according to the Inquisitr, Castle also ended amidst rumors that the costars had an awful relationship. Castle, which in the past had been one of the most popular shows about crime solving, had gone downhill fast as the relationship between Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion was rumored to be among the worst on television. But the set of Mysteries of Laura was said to be a great place to work, and the cast was sad to hear of the cancellation.

Jeff Rake, the showrunner for Mysteries of Laura, decided not to leave fans of the show hanging after the cancellation was announced, and so he shared the plans with Deadline. When fans left Laura and her ex husband Jake, Laura had rushed to profess her undying love for Jake at a restaurant, but she was too late, as Jake had already proposed to his relatively new girlfriend Jen. But Laura didn’t see the ring on Jen’s finger until after she told Jake that she wanted to give their relationship another try.

But Rake’s plans for Season 3 were going to take place in a series of flashbacks about the Laura and Jake relationship, which was one of the key points of Mysteries of Laura. The plan for Season 3 also included Laura’s former captain, played by Enrico Colantoni.

Season 3 of Mysteries of Laura was to start with Jake’s girlfriend, Jen, giving the ring back to Jake, because she didn’t want to play a role in breaking up a family that had a chance to make it work. Jen claimed that that had been the scenario between her parents when she grew up, and she didn’t want to be part of having that repeat.

But Jake tells Laura that since a lack of honesty had been the problem the last time they were together, he insisted that he needed to come clean with Laura about his past affair, and the details about his cheating. Laura had known that Jake cheated, but she never knew the identity of the other woman. Jake explains that the woman had been a witness for the prosecution in a case that both Jake and Laura worked on.

Much of the season was to take place in flashbacks, but in the present day, Laura would work out that Jake’s lover, the witness for the prosecution, had lied, and it was all part of a scheme to send an innocent man to jail. Laura would then spend much of the season trying to work out who really committed the crime, and how Jake’s lover was involved.

Entertainment Weekly shared that Mysteries of Laura was one of the “bubble” shows canceled by NBC, meaning that it could have gone one way or the other, and it was on the bubble at the time of the official axing. Though the series had debuted to bad reviews, it was a fan favorite, and the hope was that it would pull through, even if just to find out how the Mysteries of Laura story of Laura and Jake would end.

But thanks to Jeff Rake, fans now know that all’s well that ends well for Mysteries of Laura.
