Dakota Johnson, Matthew Hitt Split After Two Years — Is ‘Fifty Shades’ To Blame?
Dakota Johnson and boyfriend Matthew Hitt reportedly split after nearly two years of on-and-off dating, a source close to the couple said.
As reported by Just Jared, Dakota and Matthew broke up due to their respective work schedules. Dakota Johnson is currently shooting the sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey in Vancouver, Canada, to reprise her role as Anastasia Steele opposite Jamie Dornan, who stars as Christian Grey. Matthew Hitt is the vocalist and guitarist for the indie group the Drowners.
“They didn’t get a chance to see much of each other recently because their work schedules didn’t align. She’s been up in Vancouver shooting the Fifty Shades trilogy,” the source said.

Dakota Johnson, 26, and Hitt, 29, have been dating on and off for close to two years. In July 2014, Johnson and Hitt confirmed they are dating. Things seemed to have gone smoothly between the two until they broke up in early 2015, shortly after the first Fifty Shades movie hit the theaters. A few months since their 2015 split, Dakota and Matthew were spotted hand-in-hand in New York, confirming that they had rekindled their romance. Around that time, an insider claimed that Johnson wanted to give the relationship “another shot.”
A source also told Us Weekly at the time that while they talked on a regular basis during the duration of the split, they chose to put the relationship on hold when Dakota Johnson’s acting career took off playing Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey.
With their first split occurring only a few months after the first Fifty Shades film hit the theaters, rumors suggesting that Dakota’s involvement in the movie was the cause of the breakup started to circulate on the internet. It seemed inevitable considering the sexually graphic content of the film. The fact that Johnson and Dornan reportedly became closer to each other after filming Fifty Shades of Grey only served to bolster the rumors.
Whether Fifty Shades was the reason for the split, Dakota did admit in her September 2015 interview with Ellen DeGeneres that her role as Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades trilogy made some men uncomfortable being around her.
When DeGeneres asked Dakota Johnson if her involvement in the movie made it harder for her to date guys, Johnson’s response was pretty telling.
“You mean, like when they run away from me?” Dakota replied while laughing. “I don’t know… I guess that if those are the two options, I guess they’re scared of me. They either love me or they’re running for the hills.”
Reports in the last couple of weeks claim that the filming of Fifty Shades Darker is almost complete. James Dornan reportedly became busy doing the final scenes of the movie. His wife, Amelia Warner, and their two kids temporarily relocated to Vancouver with James for the filming. Interestingly, there have been rumors that Amelia was feeling jealous on account of the sizzling scenes her husband and Dakota shared in the film. According to a report by Fashion & Style, Amelia decided to relocate to Vancouver with Jamie because it made it easier for her to check up on him and Johnson.
Dakota Johnson was relatively unknown prior to landing the role of Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades trilogy. When asked what attracted her to the role, Johnson said it was because “it’s an intense love story.”
“I wanted to be involved because it’s so different and it’s an intense love story,” Dakota previously told Vogue magazine. “It’s just the most insane thing to be a part of. I’ve never experienced anything like this; I don’t think anyone has. It’s terrifying and it’s exciting.”
Since filming Fifty Shades of Grey, Dakota Johnson starred in other films such as A Bigger Splash and How to Be Single. Fifty Shades of Darker is scheduled for release on February 10, 2017.
