‘Game Of Thrones’ Saved Actress’ Life From Porn & Prostitution

Game of Thrones actress Josephine Gillan credits the popular fantasy series for giving her a second chance. She revealed that she was still working as a prostitute when she worked on the HBO series as Marei, which allowed her to finally leave the adult industry behind.

Josephine Gillan sat down for an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail on Sunday, June 5, in which she opened up about her old profession. Not only was she a prostitute, but she also worked as an adult film star.

“Game of Thrones saved me from a life of prostitution, and has made me a much stronger person. I was working as a w**re and at the same time making X-rated movies, using the name Sophie O’Brien, when I saw an advert on a website for actresses in the film industry.”

When Gillan noticed that Game of Thrones was looking for an actress, she knew this was her chance to get out of the adult industry. Like everyone else, Gillan was aware of the popular series based on the books by author George R.R. Martin.

“They were looking for young women with natural breasts and no tattoos who didn’t mind being filmed naked. So I immediately sent in a picture. They wrote back that they wanted me and I was thrilled because it was an amazing opportunity to do some proper acting. But I had no idea how much it would change my life.”

Gillan made her first appearance in Season 2 as a King Landing’s prostitute. She later appeared in Seasons 3, 4, and 5, with another appearance in Season 6, starting around Episode 7. Gillan says that she will also appear on Season 7 of Game of Thrones, making her character one of the longest-serving minor roles on the show. Her character is set to return for a year after she was dragged by the brothel from the Faith Militant.

She credits the show from taking her away from a life of sex and debauchery. After Gillan’s world was rocked by sexual abuse, drugs, and alcohol, she attended 24 different schools and was taken into care by age 12. Gillan was groomed by a family friend who she thought she could trust, but got her hooked on marijuana and cocaine by the age of 14.

“He raped me two years later and then pimped me out to his friends. I was too frightened to tell anyone because he threatened to bury me in the garden if I did.”

Her childhood left her feeling unworthy of a healthy relationship. Gillan even ended an engagement and returned prostitution and porn to make a living. Thankfully, Game of Thrones came at the right place, at the right time, and took her out of that life.

But not everyone is delighted to hear about the 27-year-old’s past. Some have criticized Gillan for appearing nude on the series and attempting to fake an orgasm in the explicit sex scenes, which Game of Thrones is notorious for. Now, Gillan is hoping that Game of Thrones will become her stepping stone to become a serious actress in Hollywood.

She wants to use the success of the series to find more mainstream roles as she tries to further her career. Gillan has already received additional work, including two independent films, and is scheduled to work on an upcoming horror movie in Mexico. However, Gillan is regularly asked if she’s actually simulating sex in the graphic sex scenes on the show.

“People ask me all the time if we are at it for real and I reply, ‘Are dragons or zombies real?’ The reality is that the male actors are so uncomfortable doing sex scenes that I can usually feel them shaking nervously under me. I think they suffer from performance anxiety, because they are almost naked and there are usually about 30 crew members on set.”

Though she has shunned her past, Gillan credits her involvement in the adult film industry as the reason why she appears so natural on camera. Game of Thrones has won 26 Emmy Awards, and attracts 8.6 million viewers each episode. But it still receives criticism for its use of incest, rape, murder, and torture. But Gillan wants to remind fans that it’s all just fantasy.

“Watch the entertainment and enjoy. Or don’t if you’re too prudish,” she added.
