Selena Gomez Steals The Spotlight In ‘Spring Breakers’ Clip

If you thought Selena Gomez was just another pretty face from the Disney Channel’s endless stable of cutesy teenage actors, then you haven’t seen the clip for writer-director Harmony Korine’s dark comedy Spring Breakers. In order to generate some buzz, a new clip has been released online showcasing the considerable acting skills of Justin Bieber’s girlfriend.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the film, which also stars Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco, is currently set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival this September. The film is reportedly a huge departure for the High School Musical star (Hudgens), allowing her play a character with a much darker edge.

The official synopsis on Internet Movie Database reads:

“Four college girls who land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work.”

The aforementioned drug and arms dealer will be played by James Franco, who rocked some tight cornrows for the role. Although Franco is certainly no stranger to stepping outside the proverbial box, the film should be an interesting departure for Gomez.

Although the plot for Spring Breakers doesn’t suggest anything too over-the-top, anyone familiar with Harmony Korine’s work will tell you that his movies are anything but innocent. For example, the director’s 2009 effort Trash Humpers follows the adventures of several mentally-unstable elderly folks who frequently enjoy humping inanimate objects, among other things. It’s a challenging and highly unusual experience, for sure, though it’s oddly entertaining in its own right.

According to MTV News, Korine also penned the screenplay for Larry Clark’s controversial 1995 slice-of-life drama Kids, the film which effectively launched the career of Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny.

If nothing else, Spring Breakers should be an interesting departure for both Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens. A short clip from the upcoming comedy has been embedded below.
