Police Find Children Stabbed To Death, Partially Dismembered, Mom In Critical Condition With Self-Inflicted Wounds

Phoenix Police found three children stabbed to death and partially dismembered in a closet shortly after their mom was taken for treatment for self-inflicted stab wounds. The mother, Octavia Rogers, 29, lived in a townhouse with her brother and their mother. Police and EMS were called to the home around 2:00 a.m. Thursday morning by Rogers’ brother. He returned home from work and was met in the garage by his sister, the children’s mom, who then began speaking of religion and the meaning of life and how she’d just discovered the answers. He later told police it had been a recent subject of interest to her for some reason. After they’d talked for a while, she went into the house, locking the door behind her and leaving her brother in the garage. By the time he was able to force his way inside, she was in the bathroom with self-inflicted stab wounds. She’d stabbed herself in the stomach and neck. He went to find some towels and when he returned, she was attempting to drown herself in the bathtub.

Once police and paramedics arrived at the home, they began treating her. When asked about her children, she said they were staying with a relative, according to a report by Fox News. The brother was able to confirm to police that this particular relative was someone who did keep the children on a regular basis. He also said his sister told him she was pregnant while she stabbed herself in the stomach, but that hasn’t been verified. Rogers was then transported to the hospital where she is in critical condition.

After the woman was transported, police began a routine search of the house, only to discover the bodies of the three children in a closet. The two older boys, five and eight years of age, were found in the closet with multiple stab wounds as well as some body parts dismembered, according to Phoenix police spokesman Trent Crump. The body of the youngest son, 2 months, was also stabbed and found stuffed into a case of some type and was also in the same closet. The children’s grandmother, Tanella McCoy, identified her grandsons as Jaikare Rahaman, 8 years old, Jeremiah Adams, 5 years old, and Avery Robinson, 2 months old. McCoy described Avery as a “very good baby” who was just starting to smile, Jeremiah as her little “muscleman” who helped carry items for her, and Jakaire as her “book scholar.” She said it was very difficult to talk about her grandsons, according to AZ Central. She described her daughter Octavia Rogers as a “good mother.”

“She didn’t go out, she didn’t party, she didn’t do any of that.”

She went on to say that her daughter had no reason to be overwhelmed with the stresses of motherhood and that she had plenty of help with the kids. She said she was a good mom. Also, she said there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with Octavia when McCoy was leaving for work the night before at about 9:15 p.m.

“I don’t know what to feel right now. I don’t know where to go, I don’t know where to turn. My daughter knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would take her kids… because there were times she would talk to me about leaving for the summer.”

The family members of the woman and her children are cooperating fully with the police, and said she had no mental illness as far as they knew. Police said Rogers had stabbed herself multiple times in the abdomen and the neck and is in critical condition but expected to survive. If she does, says Sgt. Trent Crump, homicide charges will be filed against her.

“She will be in the hospital for some time with some very serious self-inflicted injuries. It’s a murder investigation at this point.”

Sgt. Crump also told reporters that this type of scene is very difficult for police to encounter, according to Fox News. Employee assistance personnel were on scene and available to assist police officers with the emotional fallout. Regardless of the level of experience officers have, it was still a very emotional scene. Three children were stabbed to death and partially dismembered, and their mom in critical condition with self-inflicted stab wounds.
