Christian Singer Trey Pearson Comes Out As Gay In Emotional Letter To Fans

Christian singer Trey Pearson came out as gay earlier this week, revealing his true identity in an emotional letter to his fans.

Pearson is the lead singer of the Christian rock group Everyday Sunday. Aside from Trey, the band, which hails from Columbus, Ohio, is made up of Dan Hunter (bass), Chris Hines (drums), and Jesse Counts (guitar), according to CBNmusic.

Everyday Sunday first saw their careers skyrocket with the release of their 2001 single, “Just A Story.” They later released two very successful albums, Stand Up and Anthems for the Imperfect. The group continued to gain national recognition, and were recognized for several awards. Everyday Sunday’s hit song “Wake Up! Wake Up!” was the most-played Christian rock song of 2007, and their 2009 album, Best Night Of Our Lives, managed to land a spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

To say Trey Pearson has had a successful career would be an understatement — he has traveled the world, and has performed with other notable Christian singers including TobyMac, Switchfoot, MercyMe, and Jeremy Camp. For the past 15 years, he has made a name for himself in the music world, but now he wants to come clean and reveal who he really is.

In a letter to his fans, first published on Religion News Service (RNS),Trey Pearson came out as gay. While the singer is trying to be honest with himself and others, he is also taking a huge chance by putting his career on the line, and wondering if the Christian community will accept his sexuality.

“Most of us reach at least one pivotal moment in our lives that better defines who we are,” Pearson’s letter reads in part. “These last several months have been the hardest – but have also ended up being the most freeing months — of my life. To make an extremely long story short, I have come to be able to admit to myself, and to my family, that I am gay.”

Nearly eight years ago, Pearson married a young woman, and together they had two children together. He seemed to have the perfect life, and would not let himself believe he was gay. However, he started realizing that he would never be the husband and father he needed to be if he wasn’t honest with himself and those he loves.

“I was not making it an option to be gay so I could be loyal to her and my children,” Pearson said. “But then I realized the only way I was ever going to be my best for them was to be healthy myself.”

Over the years, Pearson has continued to learn to accept his sexuality, and has sought out them help of pastors, mentors, and counselors to help him learn to be himself. Trey said he will continue to make music, and will not let being gay affect his relationship with God.

“There is absolutely no conflict with accepting who I am and following Jesus,” he said. “God wants me to be healthy, authentic, whole, integrated and my truest self.”

“I definitely know how hard it was on my journey to be able to accept myself, and how other people’s voices and stories helped me. So I absolutely want to be a voice for other people,” Pearson added. “I know there are more and more Christians that realize how important this is, and I hope I can join with them in seeing this change.”
