Christian Singer, Trey Pearson, Comes Out As Gay, Is Married With Young Kids

Singer Trey Pearson, founding member of the Christian rock group Everyday Sunday, has come out as gay in an explosive and emotional open letter. Trey Pearson’s letter was published in (604) Columbus, and it hit the newsstands and internet on Tuesday. Trey, a life-long Christian as well as a Christian singer, detailed the struggles he faced keeping his sexuality secret for decades. He also spoke of fearing the responses of his church, family, and friends.

Not to mention his fans.

As Yahoo! News reports, Christian singer Trey Pearson says he never wanted to be gay; his upbringing taught him that homosexuality was a personal choice. So, for his entire life, Trey Pearson tried to be straight.

He even married a woman and had children with her, but according to the Christian singer, decades spent suppressing his true self took their toll.

“I grew up in a very conservative Christian home where I was taught that my sexual orientation was a matter of choice, and had put all my faith into that.”

In his open letter, Trey Pearson told his fans, his family, his friends, and the world that he was scared of “what God would think” if he lived an openly gay life. He wrote that he had been hiding and running from and trying to ignore “these attractions and feelings” since his adolescence.

As The Daily Grind reports, Christian singer Trey Pearson decidedly to be totally candid and transparent in his open “coming out” letter to the world. He described the last few months of his life as being “the hardest” and “the most freeing” of his life, saying that most people ultimately reach a “pivotal moment” in their lives that refines their definition of themselves.

“To make an extremely long story short, I have come to be able to admit to myself, and to my family, that I am gay.”

According to Trey Pearson, he’d “romanticized” the concept of falling in love with someone of the opposite sex, a woman he could make love to and build a life with. The Christian singer acknowledged in his letter that his dream had, “in many ways,” come true. He mentioned his two “beautiful little kids,” and explained that he’d turned to the Bible and platonic male friendships to try to “fulfill that void” in his life for male companionship.

Ultimately, though, this wasn’t enough for Trey Pearson.

The Christian singer said that when it came to sex with a woman, his wife, the only woman he’d ever been sexually intimate with, the first woman he’d ever made out with, the act never felt natural.

“It has resulted in a marriage where I couldn’t love or satisfy my wife in a way that she needed.”

According to Trey Pearson, the Christian singer intended to remain married to his wife, despite his suppressed sexual attraction to men, but ultimately it didn’t work. He insists that he and his wife still have “friendship,” not to mention their two kids. However, according to Pearson, if he continues to try to hide from his sexual orientation, it will only end up “hurting her even more.”

The letter states that the pair are working out a plan to co-parent their children now that Trey has decided to fully embrace and pursue his sexual orientation.

As a Christian singer, Trey Pearson’s bold move to come out publicly may cost him more than just his marriage (which is apparently already in its death throes, if his letter is to believed), it could also end up costing him a successful career.

Pearson is now 35-years-old, and he has had substantial success with his his band Everyday Sunday. His album sales number in the hundreds of thousands, he’s performed in every state in the U.S. and 20 countries as well. This week’s announcement could put an end to all that, as his Christian fan-base likely clings to the Christian belief that homosexuality is a sin.

Despite the risks, though, Trey Pearson has gotten a lot of love and support among the social media community.

The Christian singer says that even though he now acknowledges and embraces his true sexual orientation, his faith is stronger than ever.

“I have progressed so much in my faith over these last several years. I think I needed to be able to affirm other gay people before I could ever accept it for myself.”

What do you think about the announcement? Did Pearson’s “coming out” come as a shock to you? Do you think he can reconcile his career and faith with his sexual orientation? Is it possible to be a “good Christian” and gay? Have we reached a point in our collective social evolution that Trey Pearson can be openly gay while remaining a successful Christian singer?
