Human Remains Found Inside Freezer Bought By North Carolina Woman At Neighbour’s Yard Sale

A North Carolina woman was in for a shock when she discovered human remains inside a second-hand deep freezer that she had purchased for $30 from her neighbour three weeks ago.

The woman, identified only as “Jane” by ABC 11, told the media outlet that she had initially purchased the freezer from her neighbor three weeks ago under the guise that it had been used as a time capsule project with her church’s Sunday School program. The neighbor told Jane that someone from the church would be by to pick up the contents of the freezer, which had been sealed with duct tape, and once empty, Jane could keep it.

“She told me that if I could keep it here and keep it sealed until the church came and picked it up, got the contents, I would be able to keep the deep freezer afterwards.”

No one from the church ever came, however, and eventually, Jane got curious, calling the entire situation “sketchy.” She decided to unseal the freezer and see exactly what this time capsule project entailed. What she ended up finding inside were human remains she believes belong to her neighbor’s mother, who used to live in the home beside Jane’s but hasn’t been seen since last fall.

“I went in there and I opened it up. Lifted the lid and I saw a foot. And I put the lid back down and I tried to analyze what I just saw. And it looked fake so I opened it again and I looked again. But then I recognized the foot. It was her mother’s foot.”

Jane immediately ran outside to call 911 to report the discovery of human remains inside the freezer. Police are currently investigating, but as the neighbor moved away the day after she sold the freezer — claiming to be going to West Virginia to visit her mother who was in a nursing home there — the original owner of the freezer has yet to be questioned about the grisly discovery.

The human remains have yet to be positively identified, but Jane says she is 100 percent sure they belong to her neighbor’s elderly mother, and she is appalled at the entire situation.

“She sold me her frozen mother for $30. How do you do something like that?”

The remains have been sent to North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office, but the identity of the person found in the freezer will not be made public until next of kin has been notified, reports WNCN. In addition to investigating the case surrounding the human remains found inside the freezer, local police are also trying to decipher whether a murder happened or simply that the neighbor failed to notify anyone of her mother’s death, which is a felony.

Jane also says that in addition to dealing with the human remains inside the freezer, the neighbor who sold her the gruesome freezer also left their cat abandoned on Jane’s doorstep. For her part, however, Jane is upset but ultimately happy that it was she who made the discovery of the remains.

“I’m glad that I was the one who was chosen to be able to find her mother so that that poor woman can rest. She’s been in a freezer for like eight, nine months possibly.”

Although it’s uncertain why the neighbor claimed the freezer that had the human remains inside was a time capsule project for her church, it’s obvious that she wanted to rid herself of the horrific evidence before fleeing the state. There is no word yet on when Goldsboro, North Carolina, police plan to speak with the freezer’s original owner.
